Big if true. Apparently some independent news sites reported on this.

I saw the leader of Cechnya was very loudly not questioning Putin's authority. Things are getting interesting, which is worrying.

It's also making me wonder if this is gonna turn out to be Putin's Falklands. At the bare minimum, the totally-not-a-war was as much of a master stroke as a slug is a vertebrate.

Argentina's or Britain's Falklands?

This is one of the few times I'd cheerfully suggest that it should hopefully be "Putin's Las Malvinas", instead.

(Thatcher's actual Falklands turned out very well, Galtieri's concomitant Las Malvinas not so much. And probably meant he did not get to try to invade Chile after/instead of the south-Atlantic endeavour which might have led to worse excesses.)

Not entirely a parallel, but still some interesting relationships betwixt the two.

ETA: OF course, 40 years on there are Argentinians (aged <40, many of them, possibly even more so than those who were of an age to go and serve in the fight) who are still as positive that they unfairly lost a rightful conflict. And I expect that even if Putin fails (and fails badly) there will still be decades of the same engrained attitudes amongst the current crop of indoctrinated masses, and those who grow up to be newly indoctrinated. I can't see any vast wave of "well, that was awkward, but of course we realise that what happened was wrong" (excepting those already enlightened but currently unempowered/suppressed in Russian society, like our Max, etc), but I'm. I'm.open to being surprised.

Even in Germany, under active occupation, Nazism took a while to go away. I have no illusions that the Russian people can be Deputinized quickly even if the liberals/socialists end up in power. It can be done, though.

Interesting (scary) article about extremism in Russia. Putin is facing a lot of criticism (especially online) because he isn't monstrous enough. People shouting for more murder and throwing nukes. Also a conspiracy theory that the losses are to blame on traitors.

They're a minority, but a vocal and dangerous minority. It keeps amazing me. What is wrong with these people, what's driving them? Why this seething hatred? Is it resentment, jealousy?

It's cause a lot of the "extremism" you're seeing is actually the mainline attitude of common Russian state media. It's inevitable that some people are going to digest that message uncritically, especially if they're bombarded with it everyday.

I sometimes wonder how much control Putin really has over these media guys, because I can definitely think of a few situations where their chest beating bit him the ass.

It's indeed sad when people accept their leaders forcibly silencing any critics instead of trying to understand the concerns and try to improve.  It probably veers into some kind of sociology or psychology... why people are willing to be subject to such oppression.

Authoritarian Leaders cannot allow the existence of critics to their approach by their very nature as authoritarian leaders, and so have to create an environment where any criticism of them is a direct attack on the country and its people and therefore an act of treason. You are either behind the Authoritarian, or one of the countries enemies.

Interesting that (presumably) prominant politicians have even angled such criticisms/suggestions. Whether they're the "stop" or "do much more" faction (or an uneasy coalition of both?), it says something... Not entirely sure what, but it does.

And I worry to what degree these statements can apply to the United States. The first coup usually fails...
