Great, now we'll just hear cosmic background radiation, but, like, lensed a million times. You don't pick a message out of a GALAXY of stars screaming garbage by way of fusion.

So you just need a distinctive signature? Doable for a suffic. advanced civ.

And if it's not, then doesn't it just have to be close enough to stand out?

If it was close enough to stand out, we've have heard them already, we've had dishes pointed at every nearby star already and heard nothing. Best we've got for distinctive signatures are the rhythmic pulsing of dead pulsars, some of which exist out at the edges of the observable universe.

If they're a fellow low tech civilization? Then we're much more likely to get results this cheap and easy way. We have no idea of the circumstances that led to us being the only civ we know off, could be that it's a case of galactic regrowth which has everybody showing up.

The problems with it have already been stated.

Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless. What will you do on the day of reckoning, when disaster comes from afar?

The whole point of the paper is we haven't actually tried the sweet spot. It's not the only one on these lines, even.

...latency, ...bandwidth, ..handshake-delay, ...throughput.  Choose your problem(s) to solve.

Who says that the CBR isn't what's being deliberately beamed through us, speculatively in case there's a reciever set up? A form of 2D message-encryption that contains 'bootstrap' connection info at the larger scale and much more detailed info hidden in the so-far-unrecognised minutiae of the phenomenon.

Or carefully-synched GRBs. Or 6EQUJ5 actually was a clue as to where to 'look' next. (A slower version of what they did in Contact.)

Not that I'm saying that. But I think that if it were something that only somewhat mature civilisations were ever supposed to discover and do anything about, it might be beyond us still. Or not beyond us, but we've just not realised it yet. Because that's the kind of tom-foolery that Ancient Galactic Civilisations tend to pull upon young-upstart planets like ours, right?
