How do you find purring maggots, so far since 0.44 I've played on a few forts and never found them the wiki says they're everywhere on the caverns, but I've never seen them, is there a specific biome where they spawn.

Not every where, only the 2nd or 3rd caverns - [UNDERGROUND_DEPTH:2:3] - and since they're vermin, you won't normally see them, they can only be caught from a job.

In particular, you'll need to set animal traps inside the natural cavern tiles (not in any tunnels you've excavated within them), bait them with meat/fish, then wait and hope you get lucky.

In fact, you need to be doubly lucky because they're not guaranteed to be present in every mid/bottom cavern layer - they're merely eligible to appear in all of them, but any given cavern layer (or region in general) has a limit on how many different types of creatures will actually inhabit it.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

First, you need to milk a dwarf…
