Why would it be banned in the US?

There's no graphic nudity (which would result in an 18+ rating). Violence doesn't seem to be much of an issue for the US ratings system; the combat system probably would make the game 16+ or 18 though, I guess (ratings boards don't seem to appreciate detached body parts.)

Swearing does affect the ratings (so unless Toady cleans up the random name generator the game would be 16+ I guess). I hope Toady does not clean it up   :)

So does mentioning alcohol, drugs, tobacco etc. Since DF has alcohol in it, the rating would probably be 12+ (wait, the characters actually have to consume it - 16+ maybe).

[For the game Hitman 1, the swedish team had created realistic strip bar dancers. Then they submitted the game for age certification and were told to add bras. They added horrid dirty-white grandmother-style DD-cup bras to their stippers, and the game (which is about sneaking up to people and killing them) got a 12+ rating. Without bras, it would've been 18+. Strange, huh?]

[One game I worked on would've got 16+ ... the ratings people said we had to remove the word "shitstorm" from the dialogue in order to get 12+. So now instead of a "huge shitstorm coming up", we use "a huge problem coming up" and got 12+ (and a language warning)... )

Ah, but there is nudity in the game.  You can remove all of the clothes from a humanoid creature, leaving them wearing nothing (it would still only make a difference if the game had 'higher' graphics).  Also; you can attack, mutilate, torture and kill children.  That counts.

Martha: I don't understand, Jim. I bought my kids this game "Dwarf Fortress": it looks like all the other games these days, but now they're deathly frightened of their uncle.
Jim: You mean the short bearded guy you never see without a drink in his hand at the family reunions? He's your brother? I never knew! What's his name?
Martha: Urist.

I don't think any game has ever been "banned" in the U.S., and freedom of speech would prevent that.

Not to mention "barrowing"  the game and donating to Toady.

Wait wait... What's the problem with a naked dwarf lady, anyways? I mean, the beard probably covers it all up.

It wasn't exactly "banned", but the game "Fahrenheit" had to cut out all the sex scenes in order to make it to the U.S. market.  They changed the name, too.  The U.S. version is called "Indigo Prophecy".

That was actually a cool game, from what I played of the demo.  I don't know what it would be like with the "blank spaces" left behind in the story when the sex scenes were cut out...

Postal almost managed to get itself banned.  Well, the first Postal  just got sued, Postal2 got banned in Australia (where it has a very active player base, I might add).  I'm sure there's been at least one game that was banned in the states, but I can't remember it.

The only anything currently banned in the U.S. is a book called 'The Anarchist's Cookbook' which is only banned because it is basically a manual for how to be a terrorist, with detailed instructions for improvised armor, IEDs, and the like. Even this move has been met with extreme controversy. Heck, I have a shelf full of Special Forces manuals which tell how to do all that and MUCH worse. Right now, the U.S. government even considering banning a video game of any kind would be a very bad idea.

The ESRB is voluntary at this point.  Games being rated AO are not carried by Walmart or Best Buy, which is a death sentence for the commercial model.  DF isn't using the commercial model.

IMO any game being banned is just fucked, I mean most of this you see on the use. The nudity? Google, done. The violence? Turn on the news. The Language? If you've ever been to a public school, thats self explanatory as to why you shouldn't ban that. As far as terrorism goes, banning stuff just upsets the public and makes people more disgruntled, meaning that by banning something that would teach people how to be terrorists, may very well in fact just increase terrorism from within the country. Anything I'm missing here?

As for the naked dwarf chick, I'd so hit that   ;)

Well the United States doesn't HAVE to ban games...

Simply giving them an AO rating pretty much guarentees that no one will ever play it without importing.

The Logic behind this?

No Ordinary Retail Store can take AO games...

Pornography stores sell Pornography... not games that are not Porn (I never been to one of those stores... I have no idea if they even sell games at any of them)
