Is Adventure Mode a lot more demanding for one's comput
« on: May 01, 2008, 05:57:00 am »

When playing Fortress Mode, it's generally smooth enough, but whenever I try out Adventure Mode my FPS drops to maybe 20~, sometimes into the single digits. This only happens in adventure mode, too; in Fortress Mode, I don't notice any lag unless work builds up + I puncture an aquifer + a bunch of invaders attack (this did happen once)

I wonder about it too. Usually in DF mode you have much more critters/dwarves/animals and a lot of Z-levels, and I have no problems.
While in adv. mode sometimes my game freezes.

In Fortress mode, you only get a part of a travel map tile of the world.

In Adventure mode, all tiles are connected into one big world that you explore.

That may be the reason.

I belive the big difference is the Line Of Sight calculation. The game ray-traces in 3D to figure out what you can see around you. Funny thing is, it only does this for the PC, so all your drunks are psychic!

Nah, not LOS as the wait time is quite variable even when you stand in one spot. My personal guess is that it fully pathfinds every single turn, in order to make the AI smarter (unlike DF where it seems like dwarves pathfind every ten steps).  There may also be more options available to creatures in dwarf mode.  Could be wrong!

Huh. Any idea how to fix it, aside from upgrading one's computer?

I was able to fix it a little on my PC using modding and reducing the max site population, but that may have some worldgen side effects that I just haven't encountered yet.

P.S. Oh and smaller worlds give a good increase in speed too.  I guess it needs to simulate migrant movement and stuff on the worldmap while yer wandering the local or something.
