My best mason can't be bothered to do his job
« on: February 11, 2022, 10:41:33 pm »

I just decided to build statues of all my original settlers, so I restricted my one mason's shop so that only my top mason can work there.  Trouble is, he seems to fancy himself a woodcutter, and refuses to do anything but lead and observe demonstrations at the woodcutter's guild hall that I now wish I'd never built.  He ignores my borrow assignments and fritters away his time socializing, even though I set the statues job on DO NOW.  Suggestions?

No burrow is needed, and the workshop only needs "just this dwarf" to be set, then that dwarf should give that Now job priority over everything except "must eat/sleep/etc and purple needs" (they will interrupt most jobs but may continue teaching at the guild until that job completes, not sure). Try it without burrow assignments and review the workshop settings, maybe they are too restrictive.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

I finally got him to build a statue, after I removed him from the burrow.  My original mistake may have been choosing the image from the 'historical figures' category, instead of using 'specify new image' (I think that's it).

Update: I finally did get him to build several statues, but I think some of them weren't the ones I told him to make.  Ah well.

I couldn't figure out how to tell what a statue looks like by using k or q.  Is there an easy way to determine a statue's image after it's been placed?

If it's been built, you need the built item look, which from memory is "t"? If it's just sitting in a stockpile or something, you can use "k" to look at it.

because a built statue (and other furniture) is technically a building that contains itself, or some such nonsense, you must use the 't' key to perceive the shape and texture

I'll try that.  Thanks
