Discussion on Word/Letter Games
« on: January 06, 2022, 06:12:05 am »

With a subject title that dry, I should work in public office...

Since it seems like at least a few of us are kicking about word games without somewhere to talk about them other than in the Blurbs, I figured opening a dedicated thread may not be a bad idea.

For games that rotate daily, please remember to keep anything revealing to the day's answer in a spoiler tag; general strategy discussion is fair game though.

The current star, I guess: Canuckle
Mentioned: Wordle, Wordtris, Letterpress, CodyCross, Guess My Word, Babble Royale, Absurdle,, Quordle, Revertle, Footdle, Octordle
Not quite Word/Letter but close enough: Nerdle, Dungleon

Babble Royale

(It is also interesting to me because it is Free to play + microtransactions, but with a "f2p sucks" deal that unlocks all content now and in future.)

Does everyone get the same Wordle each day?

Unfortunately it looks like everyone is stuck with the same word, it's not random.

Unfortunately it looks like everyone is stuck with the same word, it's not random.

Wordle comes with a dictionary (technically an array, not a dict) in its JavaScript file, and draws the word from that.  Specifically, it chooses the position to draw from by transforming the local system date.  The transformation is rather simple, too:  Math.floor( [day as integer] / 864e5)

This means you could change the system clock to play a different word.  It also means you can cheat by looking at the source dictionary, but that sounds like an unfun kind of cheating.

P.S.: Guess-My-Word also has the same word for all players (technically two words per day)

I really like how neat and orderly today's Wordle turned out visually... though guess 3 was a bit of a face-palmer.

I somehow managed to get yesterday's puzzle again (same as Folly showed), so I was trying to think of a second word that fit the pattern.

Wordle 201 5/6

⬜⬜⬜⬜⬜
⬜⬜⬜🟨⬜
🟨🟩⬜⬜⬜
🟨🟩⬜🟩🟩
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

Edit: Got a new one! Fourth line was hilarious.
Wordle 202 5/6

⬜⬜⬜⬜⬜
⬜⬜⬜⬜🟨
🟨🟨⬜⬜⬜
🟨🟩🟩🟩🟨
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

Babble Royale

20 matches. I won my second game, while I was still figuring out the controls ("Are those blocks on the board items?")... and that's it. Multiple top threes though.

Pretty nifty; as the name suggests, it's Scrabble meets Battle Royale.

Come on, man. What are the chances of it not being my second guess? :(
