Christ, has it really only been seven days?

Quote
1. Practice some form of qigong or internal kung fu every day this year, or as close as I can manage. The occasional day missed is fine, but no big stretches without anything.
Still keeping this up fine.
Quote
2. Get better at fingertip pushups. Ideally be able to do 50 in a single set.
Been doing them daily. Up to 18 today, still below my probable 1-set max but won’t be long before I pass it.
Quote
3. Finish the current arc of my quest and start the next one. Be more consistent with updates, dammit.
Other things have precluded this.
Quote
4. Put effort towards learning another language - Czech or Chinese, either is fine.
No progress. Need to obtain money first.
Quote
5. Get therapy (again). Address unresolved issues, figure out if I'm actually as autistic as I act, etc. General 'put effort towards continuing to better your mental wellbeing' slot.
Slowly making my way through HealthyGamer material - quite a bit of it’s applicable, but I’ve got a lot to go through.
Quote
6. Write one original, not consciously based off another person or corporation's material thing. A short story, outline and partial draft of a novel, but something other than Warhammer stuff, as much as I love writing about lizardmen. Doesn't even matter if it gets shown to anyone or not.
My energy’s been focused on things other than writing.
Quote
7. Learn the long form of any style of taijiquan. Whether it's from that dvd or live instruction, just get that done.
Training session pending, may be a few weeks.
Quote
8. Attempt to come to an answer about what career path I might like to pursue. At least spend time considering it. Will likely intersect with #5.
It’s apparent that there’s other dilemmas I have that have to be answered first.
Quote
9. Make one (1) IRL friend around my age that is actually in local meatspace. Part of getting over chronic detachment from and disaffection towards people at large is making conscious effort to connect with people. This one might be mitigated by covid and/or zuckerberg shenanigans.
Video call went great - the anxiety that arose before and after it, not so much. I’ve sidestepped around my insecurities about attachment for a long while now, but I doubt I’ll make any significant progress if I don’t confront them. This is going to suck.

Health:
(questionable category choices here, delph...I think Chinese was here for like...body autonomy stuff.)
1. Sign up for Chinese classes. If I want to reach further fluency, grammar is becoming a limiting hurdle.
-- nope!
2. Maintain a reasonable diet. This cycle of binging and cutting is not good.
-- so far so good! Been eating 3 squares a day and mostly it's been fresh veg! Once work starts, that's when it'll become an issue.
3. Cook with an oven (this is harder than you might think) and introduce my wife and child to casseroles.
-- we have a toaster oven at the new place, which I'll see what I can do with. Otherwise, I reconnected with a friend who has an oven, as well as access to 3 pizza ovens... Hmmm....
4. Slay the Great Wyrm: Caffeine. You can still enjoy a coffee, but you shouldn't need 2 cups a day to survive.
-- Honestly I think I'm worse than last year on this. 4 cups a day is normal, right?
5. Re-learn how to lift. Most of what you learned was in University, and almost certainly not based on evidence. Learn proper form and practice it (every week?).
-- Oh BABY! It feels so good to get back into a gym (after 2 years completely away). Lifting light weights to absolute fatigue - practicing form and learning from guides online. Haven't found a source I /really/ trust yet, but I don't think I'm doing anything too wrong. Benching form is correct, which has always been a hard one for me.
6. See a psychiatrist/take some therapy. It'll be good for you.
-- nope!

Accomplishments:
7. Finish all the code.golf challenges, even if your score isn't very good.
-- what's a computer?
8. Eat something you grew.
-- I have a garden. It is completely overgrown and wild. Dog arrives tomorrow, so maybe I'll spend some time with her working on that.
9. Drink something you brew.
-- talked to a brewer I know... That's about it.
10. Make another game, then do a gamejam or two. Also begin seriously working on a /bigger/ game.
-- What's a COMPUTER?
11. Find a hobby to share with the wife (you know...like bird-watching or something)
-- Maybe when we're finished unpacking.
12. De-radicalize a family-member (aim for the stars and if you miss, you'll land in the eternal vacuum of space!)
-- Good luck, bub.

  • Work my way up to 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. I already have been doing enough of that this holiday, but we'll see about when I actually need to do university stuff too.
Keeping up with this so far.
  • Stretch my hands at least twice a day.
Sort of doing this every day, but not as well as I'd have wanted to.
  • Learn the basics of Aikido. Not sure what this entails. Will update this goal later.
  • Stick to my USMLE study plan
Somehow I haven't fallen behind on this yet despite forgetting about it.
  • Make my first game in Unity.
  • Like, actually sit down and draw a complete lineart. Maybe twelve. Pretty sure I drew less than that in 2021.
I drew at least one thing so far.
  • Learn enough about stocks that I actually know how to invest in them. I can feel my mental health deteriorating every time I look directly into capitalism, but I, unfortunately, have to manage my family assets at some point, and I doubt the revolution will come soon enough to free me from that.
  • Reading goals. Probably counts as 3 behemoths, but my behemoths are relatively tiny anyways.
  • Learn R programming
  • Join a local fighting game community, if I can find one.
  • Get my German Duolingo lessons golden up to Unit 3
With the pace I'm going I might actually finish this by March.

Seven more days. Ostensibly, feels like longer.

Quote
1. Practice some form of qigong or internal kung fu every day this year, or as close as I can manage. The occasional day missed is fine, but no big stretches without anything.
Kind of a bare minimum here, but I’m keeping it up.
Quote
2. Get better at fingertip pushups. Ideally be able to do 50 in a single set.
Still on the daily. Up to 25 at once now.
Quote
3. Finish the current arc of my quest and start the next one. Be more consistent with updates, dammit.
Yeah, nada.
Quote
4. Put effort towards learning another language - Czech or Chinese, either is fine.
A few more weeks, then I’ll be able to afford something.
Quote
5. Get therapy (again). Address unresolved issues, figure out if I'm actually as autistic as I act, etc. General 'put effort towards continuing to better your mental wellbeing' slot.
Continuing the HealthyGamer slog. Stuff makes sense. Can’t afford actual therapy yet, of course.
Quote
6. Write one original, not consciously based off another person or corporation's material thing. A short story, outline and partial draft of a novel, but something other than Warhammer stuff, as much as I love writing about lizardmen. Doesn't even matter if it gets shown to anyone or not.
Yeah, not right now.
Quote
7. Learn the long form of any style of taijiquan. Whether it's from that dvd or live instruction, just get that done.
Gonna attempt to arrange something this week.
Quote
8. Attempt to come to an answer about what career path I might like to pursue. At least spend time considering it. Will likely intersect with #5.
Yeah, nothing to report here.
Quote
9. Make one (1) IRL friend around my age that is actually in local meatspace. Part of getting over chronic detachment from and disaffection towards people at large is making conscious effort to connect with people. This one might be mitigated by covid and/or zuckerberg shenanigans.
In an entirely predictable twist, I’ve caught feelings. Or rather, realized they never really left from the first time around. Long story. And now that’s an entirely different hurdle to cross. And still no progress on the initial goal.

Overall, this week has been … well, I haven’t outright fallen behind on anything. Gonna have to keep moving forward.

Behemoths

1. Pass analysis preliminary exam. - I have a couple of people who asked to form a study group with me. I also got permission to take the topology preliminary exam instead, which I am much more likely to actually pass.
2. Clear algebra and analysis incompletes.
3. Prepare for and pass JLPT N1.
4. Apply to 8 opportunities I don't feel I'm sure of getting. - I applied to two and was rejected from one, with "please try again in the fall."

5. Keep a journal. - I have successfully written in my journal Once in a While without destroying it. My friend who made it for me is making a new bookmark for the journal, for my birthday.
6. Depression treatment with magnets. - I tried and am now stopping my second antidepressant treatment, which was a prerequisite for getting my insurance to cover this. The second antidepressant caused nosebleeds, nightmares, and brainmelting depression, so I'm glad not to be taking it anymore!
7. Full Moon Teas - missed January due to aforementioned depression, but February is locked and loaded.
8. Martial arts practice. Goal is to regularly practice 4x weekly by the end of the year. - went to my first practice in the park, couldn't go to more b/c debilitating depression. I'm staying in touch with them and I'm gonna go again.

9. Continue to downsize possessions.
10. Reading goals (see the Hot Fresh Reading Challenge) - I hardly read this month, but I have been reading a little more over the past couple of days.
11. Tithe 10% again this year and consistently volunteer three hours per month. - I gave away a little more than I had planned to this month to help a couple of trans people escape abusive homes and to help a local grandma get her medication. That felt really good. I'm in a long-term "volunteer an hour per week" thing with the university math dept. too.
12. New Year Cards

Report.

1) Comptia Security+ certification.
Hain't touched it. Learned a bunch about test automation software through work this month instead. I'll deem this acceptable technological advancement.
2) Join another major user project as volunteer QA/testing.
No progress. Haven't even played the week-before alpha of a major game I'm privileged to have access to.
3) Write another game mod or two.
No progress, but no leaky faucets or misaligned shelves, metaphorically speaking.
4) Write another 24 game reviews on Steam. That's two a month.
2/2. 2/24. I think I did pretty okay on this.
5) Stream twice a month. 1/2. 1/24.
No time to catch up tomorrow, so we'll call this one short. Nothing I took interest in this month is good for show.
6) Volunteer somewhere.
No development, but also I'm not driving for an hour every work day to get a friend home from work, so that time is opening up to me. Maybe it qualifies.
7) Learn about local elections and stay abreast of ones I can vote in.
Trying to stay away of current affairs, there's nothing going on right now.
8 ) Go metal detecting or magnet fishing ten times this year.
brrrrrrrr
9) Listen to 36 new albums.
3/3, 3/36. Flushed out Haken's discography, listened to some other weird stuff. BRB gonna go gush in the music thread.
10) Participate in the Hot Fresh Reading Challenge thread.
Readin' and gabbin.' Not a lot, but enough.
11) Go on a road trip.
Floating the idea of driving south and going caving/doing cave tours. Still need to see where Ranger Friend ends up stationed, and whether or not visiting him will be feasible. Planning required, when I'm not also figuring out someone's bachelor party or being coerced to visit my parents.
12) TBD - Get some more houseplants, maybe?
I did actually buy another four houseplants the other day, but as goals go, it's not really tangible. TBD.

Other features this month include becoming older, emailing indie devs, getting six friends online to play Minecraft together (I'd call this frivolous, but two are out of the country and the format we play in essentially has me leading players of every skill level), joining a community ensemble, trying not to let the depths of winter churn my soul, starting a co-op run of Borderlands with a different friend, and playing online more regularly with my siblings.

I'm beginning to feel like I'm terminally online, and that I have enough digital obligations that it feels something's gone awry if I unplug for the night. For as much as my goals reflect on leisure, I sure feel busy. Maybe behemoth 12 is where I pick one day a week to shut computers off and go walking/writing/reading/whatever.

Quick & Dirty 2022 list - February's entry has been lost in the ether.
I sorta overwrote it with March's by accident.  Oops.  There was some real progress too.
New Suit Coat stands out.
Oh well.  February's progress sorta just disappeared in the anxieties.

Again, these weeks feel both long and short.

Quote
1. Practice some form of qigong or internal kung fu every day this year, or as close as I can manage. The occasional day missed is fine, but no big stretches without anything.
Managed more than my minimum.
Quote
2. Get better at fingertip pushups. Ideally be able to do 50 in a single set.
This is the easiest of my things to do. 32 in a row today.
Quote
3. Finish the current arc of my quest and start the next one. Be more consistent with updates, dammit.
No progress.
Quote
4. Put effort towards learning another language - Czech or Chinese, either is fine.
I get paid next week, which means I'll be able to afford a language course and start on this.
Quote
5. Get therapy (again). Address unresolved issues, figure out if I'm actually as autistic as I act, etc. General 'put effort towards continuing to better your mental wellbeing' slot.
Nothing to report here, but my mental health's doing fine at the moment so it's not an active deterioration or anything.
Quote
6. Write one original, not consciously based off another person or corporation's material thing. A short story, outline and partial draft of a novel, but something other than Warhammer stuff, as much as I love writing about lizardmen. Doesn't even matter if it gets shown to anyone or not.
No writing thus far.
Quote
7. Learn the long form of any style of taijiquan. Whether it's from that dvd or live instruction, just get that done.
Set a concrete date! Took a while, but I'll call that progress.
Quote
8. Attempt to come to an answer about what career path I might like to pursue. At least spend time considering it. Will likely intersect with #5.
Nada.
Quote
9. Make one (1) IRL friend around my age that is actually in local meatspace. Part of getting over chronic detachment from and disaffection towards people at large is making conscious effort to connect with people. This one might be mitigated by covid and/or zuckerberg shenanigans.
Went out with a friend I haven't seen in a while for a birthday celebration thing. I still don't really 'get' the point of outings like that, and find it kinda hard not to feel disconnected from everyone around me while they're happening, but hey, it's something.

Bit better than the week before, I think.

There has been some lapses but I'm keeping up with this.

Yeah. Although this is starting to feel kind of pointless.
  • Learn the basics of Aikido. Not sure what this entails. Will update this goal later.
  • Stick to my USMLE study plan
I'm not doing too great at this, given that I actually have more important things to do than this BS. Maybe I ought to change it to something else...
  • Make my first game in Unity.
  • Like, actually sit down and draw a complete lineart. Maybe twelve. Pretty sure I drew less than that in 2021.
Still only have one fully realized thing.
  • Learn enough about stocks that I actually know how to invest in them. I can feel my mental health deteriorating every time I look directly into capitalism, but I, unfortunately, have to manage my family assets at some point, and I doubt the revolution will come soon enough to free me from that.
Every time I read stock analyses and some techbro's take on the market I want to kill myself, I think I might have to just review economics theory and approach this from first principles... I don't expect to be able to make clean money, but if I'm going to make blood money, I might as well gain a real grasp of it.
  • Reading goals. Probably counts as 3 behemoths, but my behemoths are relatively tiny anyways.
  • Learn R programming
  • Join a local fighting game community, if I can find one.
  • Get my German Duolingo lessons golden up to Unit 3
This is starting to get irritating as I near 50% progress on this.

I'm changing my USMLE study plan thing to a minimal 1-question-a-day thing. There's literally no point revising 62 bloody questions a week if I don't have the time to read through them, and this isn't how I study.

Well, I have two. Fitting since I don't plan on doing much with my life:

1. Build a deck for the back door.
2. Brew at least 20 dozen bottles of apple cider.

EarlyMid-February update:
9) Write a new short story and/or edit.compile an existing one
I think it's ready for editing. I decided to actually turn it into a story after making this goal (I think) so it counts!

Well, seeing how these tend to go having two might be the secret to success.

I'm already starting to regret filling up all 12.
