Hi!

As you may know, I am planning to explore the possibilities of swimming. As such, I have trained a female swordsman a little bit and am still going at it.

She is already extremely strong and unbelievably tough (so, the biggest problem with giants and cyclopses is finding them in their caves and not losing grip of the plain iron scimitar), but she was - until recently just a 'Swimmer'.

Anyhow, during an encounter with hippos, I decided to investigate the river a bit to get some swimming practice and get back at those annoying hippos.

There, I noticed a carp - I had a carp encounter some time ago and I remember that the carp actually had a dozen of his buddies nearby - which had been the reason I let it escape beforehand.

This time, I was confident in my character's skills, and I also wanted her to get some practice with her mace, so I followed (slowly, due to lack of swimming skill) the carp. And sure enough, after a little while, I cam to a place where the river was virtually full of carps and milkfish. Too bad they were scared of me, so catching up was a problem, but once you reached a small group of them - practice time!!!

So, if you have swimming skill, I can really recommend carp hunting. They seem to gather in huge schools offering lots of practice opportunities.

I did that recently.  And then I found out the hard, slow, painful way why you don't mess with carp.

School of about twenty of them.  I've got broken and mangled limbs all over, and then one swims up to me and rips my throat out.  Dwarf chunks are floating around in the water, mixing with the fish vomit and lamprey blood.

Well, it worked out fine for me. I went from dabbling hammer to skilled hammer, I think and also finally reached skilled swimmer.

The worst problem I had was getting into an actual fight because the fish kept fleeing - and I was only at 550 speed. But because there were so many of them, they kept getting into each others way, so I could harvest an occasional group.

I didn't even get a scratch and only aborted this when my character got tired (I had to backtrack quite a bit as the area I had ended up in had very high cliffs on both sides of the river.

For your possible amusement, here is an extract from the gamelog. I removed dozens of lines of "The carp stands up" and "The milkfish stands up" which were spawned by the fleeing fish. There is also a line "You have discovered a river!" in the middle of it. I am not sure why I got the message, but in the middle of me swimming up that river, I actually got that message (maybe I crossed a tile border?).

For a while I was reading that line-by-line..

Anyways, yeah, rivers are nice training in adventure mode. I don't really feel there's any unusual risk involved with fish (at least right now). Lucky shots is all... And I like using bludgeoning weapons too now that I've played a bit. Cutting off heads is fun, but I like sploding cougars too, and not losing my weapon in their guts.

What I REALLY worry about is arrows and bolts. Someone bumps into me from around a tree, and suddenly I'm being shot at, and I run, and there's no convenient trees, and suddenly I'm dead.
