Mending Labor for Worn Clothes
« on: October 22, 2021, 03:02:33 am »

Dealing with worn clothing remains a prime source of micromanagement, with few workarounds like having new clothing stockpiles only accept from clothier workshops, which doesn't work for dwarves upgrading their not-yet-worn clothing. Masterwork slightly worn clothing creates negative thoughts when destroyed unless traded away.

(Old, very similar suggestion thread.)

Suggestion to improve the situation: add Mending labor to clothier's shops.

Mending labor requires a worn piece of clothing, and thread. It has the following results:
  • Clothing status is set to undamaged (with possibility of failed outcomes like actually worsening wear or clothing becoming the wrong size, based on Clothier skill?)
  • Clothing quality can be reduced, based on Clothier skill. (especially, mended clothing that loses Masterwork quality no longer causes associated thought penalties, over time?)
  • A varying amount of thread is consumed, based on Clothier skill
  • Mending can fail completely, resulting in either a piece of unused cloth generated from the original item, or no reclaimed material
This by itself, with appropriate work orders, would be able to fix the current micromanagement of worn clothing.

In the suggestions thread it's fine to resurrect an old thread if it's similar to your topic.

I think this has been recommended several times - if not, at least dealing with clothing in some way has been up there in player demands for a bit. Surely Toady is aware. The micromanagement isn't pleasant.

It'd be a bit odd for the dwarves to fail at the task, as I don't think any other tasks can be failed (they just take a while, with poor skill). Thread itself is hard enough to keep track of, that using it to mend clothing might be a good necessity.

Hundred year old clothes might be fixable but they're not going to be as strong as if they were freshly knitted yesterday, i sort of support the idea that materials should be able to have a lifespan of tinkering that increases the risk the more patchwork and rugged it gets.

Leather being more pliable than silk and cloth, with metal mostly needing the dents knocked out.

Players might also be somewhat invested in this, especially with dealing with exotic garments bought with trade or salvaged off dead invaders that are hard to come by (underwear especially) oft comes pre-damaged through the force needed to kill the wearer.
