((What seems to be the consensus? A partnership for food for fixing the satellite?))

Food and/or mapping, telemetry is always valuable information, and we need food to survive, especially long term.

“I want local maps. Local telemetry. As well as several months worth of food.” Basil explains, “Can you offer me that?”

“I can. What can you offer me in return?” Victoria nods, leaning back and crossing her arms.

“I can repair the terraforming satellite.” Basil volunteers. “Bring it back under control.”

A scarred brow raises, and she leans forward towards him, pressing her hands flat on the table without rising. “Your control. And how does that benefit me, Basil?”

[|]

Details on the edge of awareness coalesce into awareness, into understanding the situation. Possibilities of negotiation converge on a single point, and he grins. “Because that’s the only reason you rely on the Hegemon. You don’t lack labor, land, or the infrastructure. I saw the fields as I traveled. You’ve got weapons and soldiers, so you don’t fear a conventional war.”

He leans forward, staring at her face to face, mirroring her gesture, dark eyes gleaming in the dull light of the cheap fluorescents. She wilts from the unnatural stillness, her eyes gleaming as Basil words are unconsciously reinforced with power. He seeds doubt, he fuels resentment, and he artfully directs it down a critical path. “How long before the Hegemon finds you’ve outlived your use and turns that station on you?”

Victoria’s stoic expression breaks with the widening of her pupils. A crack in her tough exterior that Basil ruthlessly exploits.

“He broke your back with that threat, didn't he? Controls your people in all but name. The monster that turned his people into mindless slaves.” The irony isn’t lost on Basil, his willpower burning bright to amplify the emotional impact of his words, but he presses forward, “Is that a future you wish for your daughter, your granddaughter? A mindless revenant with your face and genetics, but none of your joy or life? Used for some infernal war on some hellish front?”

“And you’d be any better!?” Victoria barks, her temper breaking as she pushes up from her chair and grabbing Basil’s collar. Her calm teeters. Spit flies as she yells at him. “You think you can just come in here and fix everything?! You think you can play the hero? Do better than all of us?!”

“Yes.”

And that breaks it. Victoria shoves Basil back and pushes to her feet. He stares up at her imposing frame, without expression, without fear. She stares down at him, her bulk imposing over his scrawny teenager frame. Her muscles tense as she crosses her arms over her chest. She turns, her menace directed elsewhere and she limps over to a nearby bookcase. She stares at a glass bottle on the top shelf. Minutes of consideration pass.

“How much food do you need?” Victoria asks, her attitude changing as she seems to agree. The anger gone, replaced with contemplative calm. She takes down the amber filled glass bottle and two glasses. Setting one in front of Basil and one in front of herself, she fills the cups halfway with the liquid. She lifts one, gesturing for Basil to take the other one, "Cheers."

That went much better than it could have. So how much food should we ask for since we haven't said how many crew we have we could technically get more by saying we have more crew than we actually have.

Also once we fix the satellite could we use it to kill that Hegemon guy, I mean it's a terraforming satellite so it must be able to damage them in some way.

I don't recommend using the terraforming satellite as a weapon, but instead turning it to more beneficial uses, increasing the agricultural yields of the area etc. The people we are talking to are afraid of it being used as a weapon. If we take control of it, and then immediately use it as a weapon, we demonstrate to them that we can hold them in just the same stranglehold as the Hegemon. If we use it to help them, we show that we are different, and actually benevolent in nature. Life is precious, after all.

We should ask for enough food to keep our crew fed for a few more months, maybe 6, plus a portion of the food that the terraforming satellite allows them to produce. Ideally, we'll be using the terraforming satellite to improve their farmland and boost food yields for everybody, so taking a portion of the profit from that seems pretty reasonable.

Also, we're only getting one side of the Hegemon story. This individual may be completely different from how they are being portrayed, and may be misunderstood by these people. Or they could be even worse. But either way, until we know for certain, my vote is on using the satellite to improve life, rather than end it. I personally would rather know the enemy before wiping them off the face of the earth with weapons of mass destruction. Until we have seen for ourselves, we only have the word of an enemy of theirs that they are actually a brainwashing, vile menace.

I don't think we're in a position right now to pick a fight with the Hegemon, since our army consists of just 5 people. Six months of food sounds good, but beyond that I'm not sure that they actually produce much food themselves, as they've said they trade scrap with the Hegemon for food.

I don't see why we couldn't improve the area around our base and their base, then turn the area around the Hegemon into a barren wasteland.

My perspective is that if they ever found out we did that, they would make us regret it, and we would struggle to fight them off. Even if they never suspect us, making their lands barren would displace them, and they would come to take our lands, the more fertile lands. In such a case, I think there would be too many of them to fight and win.

I think that we need a bigger army or a military alliance before we attempt to take on the Hegemon.

I mean maybe but since we don't know that much about the Hegemon it could turn out there's only a hand full of them or something, but if people are that against the idea I guess we can save that kind of stuff for later and ignore them for now.

We could ask Victoria how many there are of them. If it's just a handful, I would reconsider.

Definitely wouldn't hurt to find out more about them since they are the big bad in the area and it's always good to know about your potential enemies.
