+1 to setting up turrets. I also think that mines could be useful as well.

+1 To turrets that explode when destroyed.

+1 to that, also we could check out the exterior of the vessel a bit closer before the enemy party gets here, get an idea of how easy it will be to get in.

-1 to the turrets, a weapon tested in battle is a liability we can't afford right now. We don't know if we can sustain splitting our focus that far, and if it fails us we lose everything.

We have 30 minutes before they arrive. Developing an entirely new form of combat equipment in 30 minutes seems infeasible. A good idea for the future though. I recommend inspecting the ship, to see if we can either get it out of here before the Plague arrives, or if we'll have to defend ourselves. We may be able to use our Plague Control to weaponize the tentacle that's tying the ship down too. Outrunning the scheduled Hunt is going to be much less energy expended than fighting them, and at lower risk too.

+1 You know what this is probably a safer idea then trying to use the turrets.

Turrets are cooler, and 'safe' doesn't describe what we are doing in any way.  Indiscriminate damage will give us more time, even if it doesn't hurt those coming towards us.

Besides, we have a laser weapon pattern, so it isn't something we need to work at to make.

The trio walk towards the ship, Basil focusing his attention towards the north, to another hatchway set into the hill from which the Hunting party will soon emerge. Basil's willpower creeps out. He applies energy to the substrate of the Blighted Glass instead of using his own matter. It burns through his energy reserves to create the las-gun patterns. He successfully forms only four of the 'turrets' in the time it takes to get close to the vessel. Radioactive material is at a premium, but water vapor is plentiful.

Ten minutes remaining

[|]

"Fuck!" Sloan shouts, freezing in place.

"What's the matter?" Basil's attention snaps to her.

An accusatory finger points at a golden embossment on the side of the bright green vessel. An infinity symbol wrapped around a sword. "Its fuckin' Navy!" Sloan barks.

"Wh-what?" Basil blinks.

"This is an Empyreal Naval Vessel." Sloan explains, frustrated, "The Navy are--- I'm wanted, alrigh'? They've got me on record. Plus, they'll be suspicious as hell. About you. About us. About Twitchy. It's their nature."

Five minutes. Twitchy intones.

A pang of willpower quests from deep below, in answer to Basil's use. The vessel's hatch opens as they near.

...le....brot---h.....er...

[|]

Fuck it.

"Get on." Basil commands, turning his back on the vessel's ladder. Twitchy. Go with her.

"What?! I can-"

"I'll kill them if they hurt you." Basil speaks calm and cold. "Tell them to get it started."

The tentacle uncoils from around the vessel. The ivy falls away, withering into dust, just as Twitchy gives its final warning.

[16,15,21]
The Hunting Party emerges into a full volley of las-gun fire. The Drudges, weak-willed and caring only for their orders, rise above the hatch's floor to take the lead -- and Basil guns them down. Bits of viscera explode outward. Four fall with a burst of fire, then another four -

[26,16,39]
Two of the guns melt into the earth as another Willpower answers Basil's own. A third swivels and begins firing randomly as Basil's attention focuses elsewhere. A Herald emerges from the hatch, the last two of the Drudges behind it. A number of eyes on stalks turn to stare at Basil. Its many-lipped mouths twist into a grin. The gunfire ceases. It never hurts to be polite.

Hello, Sire. Please cease your attacks on my person--

COMBAT INITIALIZED
Spoiler: Combat Log (click to show/hide)

Mercy, Prince! The Herald begs.

[.......]
[|||..]
[20] vs [12]
The las-gun kicks back from the steam explosion as concentrated light melts the Herald's nexus into slag and ionized Dust. Its flesh twitches, ichor pooling from numerous, mortal wounds as Basil takes a step back.

No.

The smell of burning oil wafts up from the hatchways. Heat pours from beneath the ground. And a hand, as large as Basil, rips its clawed fingers up through the earth. Ivy gets snagged on hooks and twists on the fingernails. Blood pours upwards in great gouts--

[27] vs [18]
Basil slams one of the great tentacles down on the hand after a contest of will. It cracks, like ceramic, and the Eldest howls in pain. Oil pours from the fractures in its porcelain glove. Basil begins to back towards the ship, checking the LED display on the magazine with a glance. Ninety shots left.

Lifting the barrel, he sights down at the ground where the Eldest is beginning to breach--

--A loud grinding sounds. It rattles Basil's teeth. A cannon on the Vessel roars to life, spraying molten tungsten at high velocity into the hand at five hundred rounds per minute. Each bullet cracks larger and larger holes into the false flesh of the Eldest.

Basil, wisely, turns and sprints towards the Vessel. The railgun fire halts, giving Basil a clear path until he passes under the gun emplacement. He clambers up the ladder, to the open hatch, and a set of strong, gloved hands pull him into the vessel.

The door slams shut-- and Basil is slammed into the metal wall by a sudden jolt of force from the engine. Somebody falls on top of him. The thrust pours on, as the figure rises to his feet. A tanned, weathered man in an armored suit stands tall above him -- with a submachine gun pointed at Basil's face. He stands just close enough to prevent Basil from lifting the rifle in retaliation. "Who are you?"

Basil contemplates killing the man. "Basil."

"He's a Noble!" Sloan yells, over a radio system mounted in the corner. "An exiled one!"

"Bullshit." The man says, keeping the gun leveled. "What are you?"

"H-human." Basil stares into the man's eyes.

"And the black blood? What about the spike sticking out of your shoulder then? Do you think I'm dumb?" The man growls. "No human could survive that fight."

I am tired, elders. May I kill him?

No, Basil. Killing him would be counterproductive. Here's my suggestion for what to say, though I'm open to alternatives.

"I'm the guy that just saved your ass from being murdered by the Plague. The least you could do is show some fucking gratitude and get that gun out of my face, alright? I'm not going to damage this ship or hurt anyone. I just need passage out of here."

You're tired, short on time, and at gunpoint. The laws of war apply.
Still, the moment you kill this one, you'll make enemies of his compatriots.

...

Speak your piece, with royal voice. If he moves to shoot, prevent him - with deadly force if needed. What is a firearm to you but so much energy for the redirecting?

Explain yourself and if that doesn't work try to take the gun away from him before you resort to killing him.

Little King, be mindful of yourself. Life is precious.
Both you and your assailant are highly stressed.
Striking to kill, simply because you are tired,
Is something I would caution you against strongly.

Lay your weapon on the ground, and raise your hands
communicate peace with your actions.
Let your every movement be slow and deliberate.
Make it clear you intend no evil toward him.

When you do speak, let your speech be calm, not filled with anger.
Anger will only breed more anger, which will breed violence and death.
I recommend that you say something along these lines:
I am Basil, as for who I am, that is not immediately relevant.
Suffice to say I, and those with me, have no quarrel with you.
Let's focus on getting out of here first,
and we'll talk about the details once we're clear of danger.

"I am Basil. The person who saved your ass." Willpower seeps into Basil's voice as he speaks, as he attempts to soothe the man in front of him. Every word is glib, even the curses, worming their way into his central nervous systems, into the remnants of Dust within his cells. "Me and mine have no quarrel with you. I do not seek to harm the ship, or anyone else for that matter. So please get that gun out of my face."

[23] vs [28]
The man twitches. His eyes narrow. His nostrils flare. Basil reacts--

[22] vs [22]
Basil steps into the man's guard, dropping the rifle to grab at the armored chest. His other arm comes up, warding the gun away from his center of mass. The submachine gun lets out a burst of laser pulse, singeing the metal of the wall behind Basil. The Marine, in his powered armor, grabs at Basil's shoulder with his free hand--

[25] vs [17]
--and Basil lifts. He slams the man into the wall. Once. Then twice. Until the SMG drops to the ground--

"DROP HIM!" A voice shouts from the intercom in the corner. Momentarily angry, it calms. "We have guns on the dog and woman."

The Marine looks smug.

Basil looks the room over until he finds the camera. Anger comes easily. KILL.

"You must be the captain?"

A pause. "Acting."

"Are we clear of danger, Acting Captain?"

"...besides for you, I would say so. The drones are leaving us alone. No intention of intercept."

"I am not a danger to you." Basil sounds quite calm.

"Right..." The intercom sounds unconvinced.

"That's bullshit." The Marine growls. Or tries to.

"I mean at this present moment." Basil offers, after slamming the Marine into the wall again.

"Ouch. Mac, listen, just uh....shut up. Look, uh. We're just worried about what exactly we're dealing with. This whole thing is kind of out of our fucking paygrade. And, you...you uh, aren't a kid. The pirate-- sorry, Sloan. Said a kid. Then a Noble. Then an Ascended."

Basil listens on, while the Intercom rambles. Instead, Basil turns his mind inward, trying to use logic to understand how these people must feel.

[|]
These people are not susceptible to logic in the moment. They have survived on fear and paranoia this entire time. Perhaps emotion will get me further?

[|]
Basil, with a twitch of his willpower, destroys a connection within the SMG. Then drops the Marine. He scrambles for the weapon. He drags the weapon up in a smooth, practiced motion, lifting it to Basil's head and pulling the trigger. It clicks. He pulls it again. It clicks again -- he readies for a lunge -- but Basil moves first.

Basil releases stress hormones into his own makeshift circulatory system and collapses back to sit on the ground, mimicking Sloan's own high-stress response. He curls up, dragging stiff knees up and wrapping his bloodied arms around himself. Black tears drip from his eyes to the dusty metal below. "All I know is that I am Basil, and I didn't want to die in that place."

Mac, bereft of enemy stares at the defeated teenager slumping in the corner -- and makes his retreat. He grabs the firearms, but makes no hostile moves.

They leave him in the airlock.

Sloan steps through the lock, dropping down next to Basil and wrapping an arm loosely around him. Twitchy follows, plodding in behind Sloan mechanically. The Airlock door slides shut again. Basil sits stiffly, still locked in a fetal position.

She ends up falling asleep while Basil turns his attention to recharging. An internal hydrogen reactor is meticulously formed over the next six hours. The energy consumption drains Basil of his remaining reserves, but he is soon rewarded with a surplus again. It will take a great deal of time, or a larger reactor to fill it more efficiently.

It takes a total of half a day before the Acting Captain speaks through the intercom again. "Uh. Hey. Listen, we're going to move you to our holding cells. Safer for everyone, right? If you uh...refuse. We're going to open the lock."

"The plan, Bairn?" Sloan whispers, turning away from the camera.

Patience, Basil. You must learn patience.
Cooperate with these people. Peacefully.
Let them take you to the holding cells.
Even their prison will be safer than your birthplace.

I encourage you to apologize for the rough treatment of that marine earlier.
Your assault will not win you many friends,
but apology may help to at least cool their anger towards you.

Make every movement slow, deliberate, and clear.
Sudden movements may frighten them,
and frightened humans behave irrationally.
Do not extend your willpower beyond yourself for now.
Your powers may be threatening to them. Minimize their use.

Patient enough for my reckoning, anyway! That was handled like a warrior.

To Sloan, quietly: "What's my cover story?"

First, the immediate danger: if need be, you can likely force that airlock shut as easily as you disabled that firearm. That said, a holding cell ought to pose little threat to you, unless these marines have will-damping technology. Sloan's well-being is a greater concern - if you can, talk the Acting Captain into giving the two of you a shared cell.

Is this vessel still grounded? Learn what you can of the current situation, so you know what you can offer for help. You're in negotiations now.

That was hilarious, Basil.

We're between a rock and a hard place. I doubt they will let Sloan go, since she has a criminal history, and they don't seem delighted by our presence either. We could attempt to hijack the ship... but we are tired and need time to recharge. Cooperation until we are battle-ready may be the best way forward, for now.

I should point out that we seem to have taken off, so we are not in immediate danger.
