"What about 'Scribe Foo'?" you ask.

"Yes, that's good," Cos says. "If you're ever caught with your tomes of magic, we could claim you were just copying them for a client. Plus, anyone can see you're rather bookish-looking, so that's all in order."

With that, you agree to be a secret wizard for the town. You'll hold one title in public, but in truth, you'll be serving the town with your spells. You can hardly wait.

The mayor hands you an advance in the form of a pouch of gold. (Gained 200 Gold.) "The first of many, I hope," Cos says.

Having settled the matter of your official relationship to Cos, you both hesitate a little, neither one saying goodbye. Cos speaks first: "Are you busy tonight?"

"Why?" you say. From the way he said it, you don't think he's talking about official business.

"You're interesting," Cos says. "I know a lot of interesting people, but you're very interesting. And I guess…I want to show you I'm interesting too."

"Sounds like a date," you point out.

"That's the subtext, yes," Cos says. "But it can be very casual. Board games at my place? Or just a walk somewhere?"

"Ah," Cos says, disappointed. "Well, it didn't hurt to ask, I suppose." (Decreased Cos Relationship.)

You bid each other good night. He seems a little surly now. You hope you haven't jeopardized your official relationship with him. Time will tell, you suppose.

You spend the next day doing simple errands around town—getting food, then purchasing another bookshelf to help accommodate all your new stuff. You congratulate yourself on your ability to pass among the people of the town largely unnoticed. You're still just another person in town, your secret safe. You have to wonder what secrets the other townsfolk are carrying around. Is it possible everyone holds secrets that would boggle their fellow townsfolk? (Increased Empathy.)

It's when you are out on this shopping trip that you first hear the rumor that some inquisitors are coming to town. You've managed to keep a low profile for now, but you wonder what will happen when they start snooping around.

Chapter 3: Visitors

There is a firm rapping on your front doors, late in the afternoon one day. You go to the peephole to see who it is—and glimpse two inquisitors, along with a pair of Church guards in plate mail behind them.

Oh dear.

One inquisitor, clean shaven, wears a tabard with a sun emblazoned on it, indicating an affiliation with the House of Sun—the more merciful branch of the Church, thank goodness. But the other, red-bearded inquisitor wears a tabard emblazoned with a flame. The House of Flame is zealous about purging the unfaithful.

Which house's sermons have you typically attended at the end of every week?

1.The House of Sun. I strive to be better and help the weak.
2.The House of Flame. I strive to condemn and destroy evil.
3.I stopped going to church when I was old enough to resist my parents.
