"Well, you might be in luck," you say. "I just happen to have a book on the subject of learning healing magic, right here on my bookshelf." You pull the ancient tome from your bookshelf and proffer it to Blessed Sam.

Sam doesn't exactly seem surprised that you have such a book, but he recoils when you offer it to him. "Ah, well…"

"Surely you would only do good with this power," you say.

Blessed Sam hesitantly takes the book from you. He flips through it. "It's rather dry, isn't it?" he says. "Technical."

"It was once an academic textbook, I think," you say.

"And here it is, how to heal wounds." He blanches. "It's…it's actually rather simple, isn't it?"

"I think pulling the energy and attaining the right level of concentration are the hard parts, not easily conveyed in a book," you say. "I happened to pick them up quite readily, but I've since realized I may have an innate knack."

Sam looks longingly at the book. "You've certainly given me a lot to think on. It's very tempting to try out a spell here and now. But it's not so easy to give up your past, your community." He considers for a moment. "Tell me, what do you plan to do with your magic in the long term?"

1."I want to start an academy and spread knowledge again."
2."Like you, I want to go from town to town helping the sick and needy."
3."I just want to create wondrous things."

Plot Points

Chapter 1

You and Tal stumbled on an ancient magic academy.
You discovered a book of vivomancy, and an inquisitor chased you.
You found an ancient dueling ground.
You killed the inquisitor with negation magic.
You explored the academy library.
A divination revealed a potential ally in the form of a golem, so you took a manual on the operation of golems from the library.
You animated a serving tray to retrieve an alchemy set, but in the process, you released some dangerous chemicals.
You found a laboratory with a trapped specter.
You destroyed the specter.
You obtained a clutch of dragon eggs from the crow's nest of an ancient airship.
It became clear that the spilled chemicals were going to consume the whole academy.

Chapter 2


You flew up the coast of the Negative Sea back to Akriton.
You created two horses and freed them in the woods.
You made your parents think your finds in the academy were purely of historical interest.
You read in True Life of Abraxas that those who follow orders regularly are more likely to be glamored.
You learned the location of the Magisterian capital from True Life of Abraxas.
You met a hat seller but bought nothing from her.
You allowed a thief to steal from Fruitseller Fran.
You agreed to hunt a dodecapede with Tal.
You kissed Tal.
You restarted the automated mine that was the dodecapede's lair.
You restarted Akriton's giant fans after the death cloud passed.
Cos and you agreed that you would secretly work for Akriton.
Though you thought you kept a low profile, you heard inquisitors are coming to town anyway.

Chapter 3

Two inquisitors came to your door: the more aggressive Blessed Jacob, and the kinder Blessed Sam.
An old man intervened, claiming you weren't home.
You waited until the inquisitors left.
The old man revealed himself to be Mayor Cos, who is a shapeshifter.
You went to a House of Sun service, led by Blessed Sam.
In the middle, your vivomancy disguise wore off, but Blessed Sam did not take any action to pursue you.
Blessed Sam asked you to heal his pet dragon, Thomas.
You agreed and healed Sam's dragon.

The coin says we want to create wondrous things.

"Wondrous things?" Sam says. "No need to change the world?"

"Wondrous creations do change the world," you say. "Perhaps not in large ways, but in ways uniquely mine." (Increased Optimism.)

"Perhaps it's as you say," Blessed Sam says. "In which case, I think we have perhaps made a grave error, imprisoning all those mages in the capital. Mages who could otherwise share your dream." He looks down for a moment. "I want to think about this. Pray on it. If I come again tomorrow morning, alone, then I have decided to help you. You would like to meet the other mages in the capital, yes?"

"Yes," you say, astonished.

"I can help you meet them," Blessed Sam says. "If you teach me magic."

The idea of not being alone in your pursuit of magic, and gaining Sam on your side as well, is too appealing to pass up. "Done," you say.

Blessed Sam offers his hand, and you shake it.

The next morning, Sam does appear at your door alone. He looks extremely tired, with great circles under his eyes.

"I guess you decided…?" you begin.

"To take a leap of faith," Blessed Sam says with a smile.

Chapter 4:Under the Cathedral

Examining the exhausted-looking Blessed Sam standing at your door, you notice that your book of vivomancy, tucked under his arm, now has a nice leather book cover with a yellow, sun-shaped patch on the front. You wonder whether his Book of Abraxas was in that cover before. Maybe he just had a spare?

"Did you successfully cast something last night?" you ask.

"I did. I did!" Sam hugs you. You hug back, since it would be awkward not to. "I cast a healing spell!"

"That was my first spell, too," you say, fondly recalling some of that initial rush when you and Tal were being pursued in the academy. Sam nods in approval at your first spell, as if it is surely the most important spell to learn first. (Increased Sam Relationship.)

"But I have bad news," Sam says. "I'm supposed to leave today with the others. I can't stay here or disappear—that would just cause trouble for you, I'm sure. Trouble for both of us." He sighs. "Could I possibly convince you to come work for the Church after all? I have a plan. I think you could use magic, openly. Well, somewhat openly. We could learn and practice magic together. But it's not my place to tell you about how that would work. What do you say?"

1."All right. I'll go back to the capital with you."
2."I'll go to the capital with you, but I want to meet other mages before I commit."
3."I have things to do. I'll meet you in the capital soon. You can introduce me to other mages then."
