What a start...
« on: August 08, 2006, 01:27:00 pm »

On my 3rd try (after botching up my fortress supplies selection on the first two tries) I finally pick a site and start learning how to dig and build stuff. But suddenly, without any warning, my fledgling outpost gets overrun by a terrible, vicious horde of... mandrills!  :p

Wikipedia:  "Although the Mandrill does not normally hunt larger prey, on some occasions males have been observed to hunt and consume duiker (a small antelope). Despite this it is well adapted to fighting and is not to be provoked."

At least you can make colorful shoes out of them, assuming you survive.

Botching supplies selection? I went with default supplies and pumped all points into skills. It will probably cause me problems in the long term...

The play now! option gives you a lot of novices, 2 dogs and 2 cats.  This was mainly to avoid the use of the v p l interface for the first season.  The playtesters had various start strategies, but in the long run, as long as you get basic living quarters and a farm, and manage to control predators, you don't really need to spend any points at all probably.

Even though they had taken heavy losses in their first attack, the mandrills later returned in greater numbers for another onslaught. One dwarf was cruelly struck down, while another could take it no longer and threw himself into the river. The remaining three seem to have gone insane with the trauma, leaving the mandrills free to pick through what's left of my supplies...

I don't know whether to feel sorry about things or laugh at the comedy of the situation  :D Fun fun - take 4, here I come!

Seeds!!!
SEEDS!!!
Thats my starting strategy...

If you want an epic fortress you need lots of food!  So bring seeds so that you can grow tons of food!

Before the first season change, I was attacked by a lone bear. It died, didn't even hurt my two attackers. Then... *shudder* 6 racoons!!!

I feel your pain ASDR Raccoons are truly a mennace.

Toady, I don't think I will ever be able to forgive the fact that all packs of raccoons seem to be rabid, ratcap fannatics!   :)  ( Inside I truly do love the Raccoons because they look so cute and fluffy! r I mean, how can you not think that is cute?)

Erm, I just started my first fortress after killing off a bunch of adventurers.  I seemed to have started off nicely, There were a couple harmless racoon swarms, and I was able to kill a couple bears.  Then a Grizzly bear showed up, killed my hunter, but I was able to kill it to.  Then, while my dwarves were carrying the pieces of my hunter to the graveyard, strange things started happening.  I was getting combat messages I couldn't locate, then another of my dwarves died from... nothing, I couldn't find anything that could have killed him.  Then another... then another.  Finally, I witness one of my  dwarves killing his own dwarven brethren, and at last he was the last dwarf standing..... then he threw a tantrum and went to bed.

WTF?

edit: hmm, upon closer inspection, it seems the murderer has a red head wound...

It's probably related to the berserk bug...  they really do seem to start a civil war at the slightest misplaced strike now.  I've partially fixed this and it should be all cleaned with the next release, which'll be less of a wait than the last one.
