After watching the MKL security toads drag Waluigi away from the podium, Cranky Kong blinks in astonishment, then steps up to the microphone.

Hello? Hello? Is this thing on? *cough* Yes! Well, that was a good race, wasn't it? Reminds me of the old days, when racers had to put together their own Karts from nothing but a coconut tree and a bushel of bananas, and didn't have to worry about all this newfangled crinkum-crankum. I'd like to thank my great-grandson Diddy Kong- not only did he do one bang up job of getting the Speedy Pete into racing trim, but he also found a new and improved replacement for my beloved walking stick, without which I would have never been able to defend myself in that final, decisive turn. That's the kind of inventive, old-fashioned pioneering spirit I came out here to encourage on the track today! Why, it reminds me of the time I was racing Jump Man through the Crystal Gorge of Quetzldoppabopolis! In order to cross the bridge at Death's Hand Bend, you needed these special badges from the nearby checkpoint. So, I tied an onion to my belt, as was the style at the time. We couldn't get the white ones, on account of the war- it was one of those big yellow ones. To make a long story short, when I finally got to the badge station, I needed to pay 5 Coins for it! And in those days, Coins had pictures of bumblebees on'm! Gimme 100 Bees for a 1up, you'd say. So now that I had my badge, I needed to get back to the racetrack. So, I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time...

As Cranky's acceptance speech becomes increasingly long-winded and "inventive," Diddy packs the Underdog Open Trophy into the rear of his hovercraft (along with the winnings) and heads back to the garage at the Barrel Embassy. Being the Pit Crew Chief for Cranky has given Diddy a bit of celebrity of his own, and he waves good-naturedly to the crowd as he idles off the track. Nobody seems to notice one of the fans enthusiastically returning his wave is a suspiciously mousey fellow in a trenchcoat carrying a very suspiciously empty umbrella case...

"Coconut tree and a bushel of bananas, eh? I'll have to try it that way some time, it sounds like fun, hee!" Jack wanders off the podium with the earnings, hoping to spend them on the materials the old ape mentioned. Though it doesn't seem like the mushroom kingdom has quite the right climate for coconut trees... Well, regardless, Cranky sure seems to know what he's talking about, and while Jack doesn't know if he's qualified as a mechanic, there's only one way to find out!

It's a few days later, back at a bar.

So why'd you quit, Olaf?  They were just saying you had a string of rotten luck.  Nothing you can do about that.

Not just that, things felt wrong, they didn't work like they did in practice, like how I expected.  And right when it was important, it seemed everything just went against me.

Practice?  You're not going to lie to me.  I know you didn't do any practice.  Too much like work!

Well, okay, maybe I didn't have time for any practice.  But there were these kart motors, and seeing them reminded me of the Indy Super Cup.  But that didn't have any cheating in it..

You mean like Rip and Shred, and how come they always went on to the next planet, no matter how badly they did?

Well, I don't know, it looked like a lot of fun to me.  Why quit?  You could just win the next one.

It's late night in the Mushroom Kingdom, and the full moon gleams down on still, reflective waters. Most of her inhabitants are busy driving home after a long day at work, but for a particular pair of kart drivers the real works is about to begin...

Waluigi is driving his hastily modified 'Dark Kart' (as it will come to be called) through the city-obeying all the traffic laws so he doesn't get arrested. He's not in any particular rush, though he knows Baelogs contract will be all but rewarded to whoever arrives first. But luck is on Waluigis side! The blue mushroom has been locked in his racing trailer ever since the race, refusing to speak to the press. The monkey and ice cream cone are strutting about on tv as their media correspondents celebrate their new sponsorships. He was a bit worried that Bowser would show up (more than a bit!) but his radio just blasted that the Big Lizard stole his contract that Team Flare offered him! He's a thief! That contract was Waluigis even if he didn't want it! So he had no real cause to hurry...when a wideand flat looking milk truck driven by a scruffy dog cut him off, he wasn't particularly concerned. When it idled in the turn lane without moving and stood like a two dimensional image would have, he waited patiently. Eventually, he just decided to go around-this looked like the Moonlight Highway he had read about. A quick run around the track and he could get onto the overpass and get to his precious viking soda! Or was it cola? What was the difference between cola and soda, he wondered...

That was when the other one pulled up beside him...

Waluigi feels his kart is momentarily cleaned of poison shrooms!

Dick Dastardly, in his newly upgraded Mean Machine, had great cause to hurry! He was pretty new to this realm, but already getting the hang of things. He and Muttley had spent some valuable time rooting through the garbage of the other racers all afternoon, and found all of them had similar looking empty bottles with small handwritten notes-inviting them to a accept a free racing contract, if they got to the address first. The concept of such gains intrigued him! One needed money to live a dishonest life, and Dick was no exception.

As he motored through the unfamiliar (though disgustingly colorful) city, he found that there was only one other racer going for his same goal. The very man they'd compare him to! As if there could be any compare!

His clever plan allowed him to catch up. It mostly involved Muttley driving a large billboard with a truck on it, placed on two skateboards, across the road. The dopey plumber was of course, fooled perfectly-by the time he went to go for a spin around the track, Dastardly was right behind him and ready to pull ahead-as soon as Muttley pulled out! Dick was somewhat amazed his plan actually worked, and less amazed as Muttley grumbled in his vehicles radio that he had actually managed to get the billboard truck stuck between two Thwomp dividers and couldn't move it aside.

Drats! It seems this would come down to somewhat honest racing...well, somewhat was the goal, yes?

Waluigi and Dick Dastardly pull up alongside one another. It's clear that it'll be a race, though a short one-a spin around Moonlight Highway, one lap! Winner takes the prize!

So, are we rocket starting, or playing it safe?

Dick Dastardly presses a big red button on his mean machine to not only make sure he appears at the top of the race board, despite tying in position, but his handsome picture is twice as large as Waluigis! The race master thinks his picture from discord looks better too, though that's just a personal opinion.

The first section of Moonview Highway is the hardest! Only the most skilled power sliders can make their way through the inside of the track without getting squashed by trucks-those who favor the outer lane with oncoming traffic have an easier go at it, but might lose valuable race position...do the racers protect their speed, or try to pull ahead?

...But immediately regains it, his kart bringing it's speed to 2-due to high acceleration tunes of Romeo And Juliet, Op.64, Act 1, Dance Of The Knights.

The sound of sirens and 'awoooga' horns are heard down the street, as caddy wagons full of toads with nightsticks race comically after the two racers.

Dicks rocket start alerted the local mushroom rangers!

If either racer falls back, they might get arrested!

The incoming lane is being hogged by...An Angry Looking Koopa Car! Better stay out of his way!

The oncoming lane has two big trucks going much slower-one of them is a Cucco truck carrying a bunch of sleepy chickies, the other is a huge tanker truck filled with something greasy, just begging to be spilled all over the track...I made that sound pretty dirty, sorry.

Item boxes gleam on both lanes! Maybe they were put here in anticipation of a race soon? Or left behind from construction.

Or maybe the race master wishes for amusement.

Seeing Waluigi begin to build up demonic speed behind him, Dastardly realizes his only chance is to outrace him!

Dick begins to pick up speed! There's no way he'll be caught so easily!

Waluigi gonna win! As usual, the thrill of victory makes him entirely careless!

[1+2=3] Waluigi rides right into the Cucco truck, sending eggs and feathers flying! His Kart is squashed as the angry chickens swarm him! (-4 Momentum) (Now 0!)

[5+2=7] But he gamely limps forward, with the last of his strength, to knock the valve off the tanker truck ahead of him!

Icy Mist covers the raceway!

Dick meanwhile, grabs a crate of eggs and dumps it into his engine! It seems to respond well to a high cholesterol diet-his kart speeds and up, and he weaves between most of these annoying hazards with little difficulty-first one truck, then right through a puddle of cold gas, then the other truck! Wala!

He realizes after a moment he should have avoided that cold gas. His kart begins freezing up!

Dastardly takes one freeze damage and loses one momentum! (Now -1!)

Racers, on your mark!

Dick Dastardly, long icicles on his nose, zooms after a comically flattened Walugi! But he can't catch him due to being ridiculously slow himself!

Waluigi CANNOT pull ahead!

Dick [5-1=4] manages to avoid falling back by the narrowest of margins!

Cleanup Phase
Dick Dastardly cranks up his Grab-o-Glove, not that it was really needed-with so few items on the track, he couldn't possibly fail to grab!

Dick grabs one of 'green shells' he's heard so much about. Doesn't seem like much, but maybe it'll dissuade that pestilent plumber from attempting to ram him again?

Waluigi, meanwhile, is pretty sure the overly complex instructions warning him about his kart (and his module) exploding weren't mere rumors-he swerves to avoid the dangerous item boxes!

[4] Hah! Waluigi successfully fails!

Dick's kart warms back up, restoring him by 1 momentum! (now 0!) His high acceleration kicks in too! Now 2 momentum!

Hey, what's the noise like ice cracking? Hmm, it seems that a frozen kart takes more damage the more speed it has to recover...

Thinking quickly, he puts on Tchaikovsky Valse Sentimentale Op.51 #6, which calms down his engine down before it suffers any damage! Ah, now that really brings me back...

...Waluigis Kart also rolls back up to 1 momentum! Maybe he should get some villainous music too.

Waluigi hits the Dark Star for a final power boost! +2 Momentum (Now 3, 0/3 Dark Star energy Remaining!) and he concentrates on not getting squashed again, while hitting all the zippers! (+1 vs attacks, hazards, and passes!)

He hears his doppleganger behind him fire a green shell! Waaaa! Evasive action!

Waluig uses his classic 'panicked spinning of the steering wheel' technique, rolling his kart over on two wheels as the deadly shell whizzes right by!

"Victory is assured you say?"

Showcasing the confidence Dick Dastardly is well known for, he tries to blast Waluigi with a shell while racing very dangerously into oncoming traffic! (-1 vs hazards!)

Dick remembers why he prefers to set traps. It's hard to aim at people who move! Drats!

But a true villain is never down for long...

Dick reaches down onto his dashboard and manually adjust his speedometer to increase his karts speed! Who needs the laws of physics when you can cheat?

Waluigi is being very careful not to hit any trucks! With a number of advantages (oncoming traffic, big trucks, and defensive driving) he veers between them easily! (Auto-passed!)

Waluigi nails all the zippers, gaining +1 momentum! (Now 4!) And he wangs the valve on the tanker truck too! It spills out a gusher of flaming podobos!

The track is on fire!

Dick's route is on the other side of the track, and somewhat more dangerous...

He manages to avoid the large truck by cleverly taking a shortcut right through the sentient lava! Genius!

Dastardly takes one heat damage! His kart is on fire!

Megaman, of course, has no mercy.


"Prepare to get deleted!" The Blue Tinker Toy announces, firing blasts from his arm cannon in Dick Dastardlys direction!

Or at least he would have, if Muttley hadn't replaced his energy tanks with a can of air freshener! Instead of energy lemons, Dick gets a refreshing scented breeze!

"Noooooooo!" Megaman says, veering into a wall and exploding!

Having cleared all the tricks, Dick Dastardly can take advantage of the much larger and more satisfying zippers on his side of the track! +3 Momentum! (Now 8!)
