I'm going to be out of town from Monday through Friday, so I'll probably posting actions exclusively on the Discord until then.

It was a special case. Normally a fall back means you got totally destroyed, mechanically you just failed to complete the shortcut, but didn't crash. I'll update the terms in the next 'build'.

It's like..

Fall back (you redo original segment again, start at 3 momentum)
Success OR failed shortcut (move to next segment at current momentum-some failed shortcuts do make you fall back, but not this one)
Pull ahead manually (Spend 4 momentum, move forward two segments)
Shortcut to pull ahead (Spend 1 momentum, move forward two segments)

Not all shortcuts are intended to be do or die, some of them are always better to try and attempt. This shortcut is pretty soft in that as long as you have a cheep, you can only fail it and advance normally, not wipe out.

The only way you could fail was trying to literally jump over the gap manually at high speed.

Now these rules may be picky, but I'll note your failing roll would have rammed you right into chompy otherwise, which would have lead to the same thing-failed shortcut, advance normally.

More rules in da works.

Shortcuts and Long Delays
All shortcuts cost at least 1 momentum. Some shortcuts risk a Fallback on a fail, forcing you to redo the segment. For all other hazards, you risk a Stall.

If your momentum is 0 at any point during your attempt to navigate the shortcut, or you suffer a hit from a hazard, you risk a Stall-this passes you to the next segment as normal from your starting segment, but does not pull you ahead. You regain momentum up to your minimum cruising speed as normal during the cleanup phase. You do however, begin ahead of any racers in the previous section

Was supposed to do that in cleanup WHOOPS

As for what went wrong, Joe followed by the tried and true mario kart strategy of racing somewhat poorly and using an item to cheese his way to the front!

Looking it over, I thought that it'd cost one momentum to pass Olaf, if he didn't get lucky and hold someone up, but everyone shortcutted making that redundant.  Might be a track design consideration.. maybe there shouldn't be a shortcut immediately before the pits?  It's much more of a penalty to use them if there's no chance to block people while coming out of the pits.

Also, don't forget the zapped debuff!

On the whole, I think I probably still should have went in there, Olaf would have fell behind anyway, either from negative momentum or the resulting ram-check from Joe.  The -1 momentum on Joe would have scotched the final pull-ahead into green, but Olaf would be right where he was, except with three momentum and at least two hiccups.

So no upside to not pitting.  Not inventing a track maneuver to allow Olaf to ignore the lightning bolt really hurts.  ;-p  Really, Olaf lost his chance to win on those two consecutive ones last lap.. one to fail to dodge the green shells (and likely slam into Jack Frost), and one to suffer no shortcut on the shortcut.

I think I'd also suggest making leaving the pits always start you with three momentum, the same as if you fell back normally.  A rocket start can only be worse than that, making them less attractive.

...  Also, I'm trying to figure out how Waluigi ended up in front of Olaf.  Didn't Olaf just stall out in the same way?

Ahh, that's much more appealing.  Really, the only reason I visited was the near-guarantee of falling back anyway due to the thunderbolt.  Remaining near the front was already doomed at the end of the last turn.

New Pit Stop Mechanics

Heading into the Pit Stop now causes a Delay, leaving you at the back of the current racing pack, but able to pass to the next segment as normal. Your momentum resets to 0 when first entering the pit.

Pitstop services are as follow. You may take advantage of any number of them.
-Repair Work: Heals a single mid-race hiccup, once per race. Clears all debuff and penalty effects, such as black marks and track specific penalties.
-Inventory Shuffle: Reroll any active or reserve items using a tier from your position when you entered the pit. If your item has a limited amount of charges, repair them to max. Move a dragged item to reserve or vice versa. Active items do not time out while in the pit stop.
-Shield Dome: While in the pit-stop, provide total immunity to all attacks and targeting during the action phase. An important exception is Headshot items, such as the Blue Shell-these strike in the Hazard Phase! (hazard phase is another small rules change soon)
-Nothing Stronger than Family: Your pit crew can help you in other ways as well, such as hints for track mechanics, sneaky tricks on other racers, and improvising ways to bypass obstacles and create new shortcuts. Use your imagination!

After the conclusion of a pit stop you are entitled to a special ROCKET START in your clean-up phase, rather than resetting as per cruising speed. This roll cannot critically fail-racers at the back of the pack can take advantage of the speed boost to make up for lost momentum
