It's components are visible but it itself isn't... but aren't its components part of it? How can something's components be visible but the thing itself not be visible, at least partly, due to its visible components? Maybe I am misunderstanding the word 'component' and it's more like stuff that helps to generate/sustain it, rather than being actual parts of it? It would be helpful to get an example of something that has visible components but isn't visible itself, because I can't really think of any.

Take "component" literally, but think about something nonphysical. What are the components of a word, or of a song, or of 19th-century Continental philosophy?

I still can't think of anything that has physical components but isn't physical... it seems to be self-contradictory to me. The components of a word are letters, but letters are equally visible as words. The components of a song can be considered a rhythm, melody, lyrics, etc, which are as audible as the song itself. And the components of a philosophy can be considered ideas/tenets which are equally conceptual as the philosophy itself.

I honestly agree, which was exactly the point of contention I was raising with A_C_C. I would say that the thing in question is visible. But you could conceivably imagine that, say, the components of 19th-century Continental philosophy are the writings of 19th-century Continental philosophers, all of which can be seen, even though you might not say that you could see 19th-century Continental philosophy itself, right? Or that if you read the printed notes of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, they are certainly all visible but you would not necessarily say you see the song itself? I mean, I probably would, but apparently A_C_C would not. The point is, there is a layer of abstraction involved.

Yeah, we’ll… It’s a family of things and I’d argue that a “family” (being an abstract concept and separate from the collection of the members of the family) is both intangible and invisible, while it’s individual members don’t have to share those qualities.  I think this is where we disagree, however I’m considering conceding the point if it gets things moving.  What do you think?

Yeah, I simply disagree. Like I said, if I have the whole set of things on a table in front of me, I can see both all the individual things and the whole set of things.
But really right now, your problem is simply that humans have an amazing amount of tunnel vision and they've got to figure out how to get out of the rut they're in. I think the hints are adequate for this!
