Is it a specific software rather than a class of software?

No.

Do people (other than computer history buffs and similar) still use it today?

Depends on what you mean by “regular people”, and what you mean by “trained professionals”…

Well, a word processor can be used by just about anyone who can type, whereas a  computer-aided design application requires a lot of training to be meaningfully used.
Would you say the level of training needed to use it is closer to that of that word processor?

I’d be interested in knowing whether you would place hobbyists in “ordinary people” or “trained professionals”.

Also, what do you consider training?  Are hobbyists who are self-taught considered “trained”?  Or, do they have to complete a professional training course?

Also, modern word processors can take a lot of training before a person can understand and utilize all of the features (although, if all you want to do is type up a basic document, then you can skip all of that extra training).

I’d consider the total amount of training to utilize all of the features of the thing(r) to be less than what is required to utilize all of 5he features of a modern word processor.  On the other hand, I’d say that just getting started requires more training than just getting started in a modern word processor.
