So, it's something humans invented, but no one knows when, not found in the average home, sometimes made out of metal, has moving parts, would not fit in a shoebox, but might or might not fit in a 1-meter cube.
It is not: performing computations, hurting people, a component, used in astronomy, used in chemistry, used in primary or secondary sectors of the economy, religious in nature.
but it does serve a purpose.

Was it more common (per capita) 100 years ago than it is now?
