Thinking about it again, non-metallic materials aren't all that uncommon.
To this question: a certain non-metallic material has been more common in the past, at least.

So, it's a man-made object that fits into a 10cmx10cmx1m box, probably invented between 2000BC and 1AD, is used in ground work and on the water,  involved (in a way) with agriculture, warfare and transportation. Can be found in the kitchen, is usually made of metal (but can be made of wood.)

is it used for cooking?

To clarify: sometimes it is made out of other materials than these. And wood was mainly a historical thing, as King Zultan found out.
