In terms of language, start with an introduction.  Point to yourself repeatedly and say your name.  They should be able to figure this out, and do their own names.

A gift would be nice here.  Retrieve the basket and offer it to them.  That will confirm you as not a threat.

Hm, try copying what they say, maybe they’ll figure out you don’t understand either? Maybe they’ll point to things as they say the word for that thing? I’m guessing

Its kind of hard to tell when once word or sentence ends and the next begins, but I'm repeating after them. They started talking slower. All their hands are kind of occupied so I don't think they'll do much pointing.

Try drawing things on the ground and see if they can figure that out.

I'm not sure of they actually have the concept of names yet. I tried and they all repeated the same word pointing at themselves (apparently they can point if they set their things down). I'm not sure if they're telling me their tribe name, their word for hunter, or if they really do understand and it is a family name sort of thing but it does feel like our conversation is restarting!

Even if it doesn't work I could still work out that gods/magic angle, but I need advice on how. What way do I wiggle my fingers, what do I chant, what brand of hatred do I feel? I'm willing to try anything but I need directions!

Unless our wayward pal is an artist, non-verbals (pantomime and body language) are probably a better bet.  Inviting himself for a meal would be a good start.  Point to your mouth, rub your stomach, and hope they have a culture of hospitality.
