Newton

A bug net would be a perfectly good shiny!  Lets see exactly how careful this hunter is.

Next move is up to the hunter, although if it looks bad, Newton can use Yoink! to turn the bug net into a bauble.  The main trouble with this is Newton wouldn't end up with the bug net, so it's not ideal.

Newton lies low and waits for an opportunity to escape.  If the bug net is put down, or is secured in some way where the hunter is no longer holding it, he'll put it inside his inventory and flee.

If he's thrown in a cage or something, there will be a chance to unlock it and perhaps steal its fittings, or maybe the entire cage if it isn't too large.

Brynn

The dragon lifted her gaze as she heard Mira's question. "Perhaps this Nergigante has more value to the ecosystem than it initially appears, and is a predator best reprimanded and corrected for misbehavior, rather than slain? Or mayhaps if the resident one falls, something worse may arise to fill the vacuum."

She looks to the Commander. "Good Commander, how far is the Elder's Recess, and what manner of creatures should we expect there beyond the obvious Elder Dragons?"

"What is the terrain like around the Elder Recess? Any hazards we need to worry about? Falling rocks, presence of flammable materials, et cetera? If that's everything... I believe we are ready to go." IP turned to the others for confirmation or denial.

"The terrain in the Recess is rough and craggy. There's volcanic activity there, so be sure to bring cold drinks or other heatproofing methods. There are also several large crystal formations, and they're prone to cracking when subjected to impacts, so use this to your advantage." The Commander nods at Brynn. "Your large friend is right. Nergigante acts in the same role as our hunters, preying on monsters that get out of hand. Not to mention it's absurdly difficult to kill.

As for other wildlife, there isn't much of note. There's a Gajalaka tribe that makes their home there, which can be a nuisance, and the Barnos there are fairly aggressive, as are the Gastodon, but I doubt they pose an actual hazard to you.

When you're ready, we have wingdrakes prepared to carry you there."

Meanwhile, Newton is taken to some kind of wizened old scholar amidst piles of books. His stature and pointed ears suggest he isn't human. Newton is evaluated for a moment, and a brief exchange ensues, in which the scholar expresses how curious this new specimen is, and the hunter says where he got Newton. He's awarded what seems to be a fair sum of points, at which point the crow is placed in a large cage with some edible plant matter and a perch. He quickly discovers that the fittings are constructed such that inquisitive birds and the like would have a lot of difficulty breaking out, with very few actual joints in the construction.

Newton

Currently trapped, Newton thought over the situation.

Okay, now this is a bit of a mess.  Do you two have any ideas?

We could just wait for this scholar to open the door eventually.  We'll get a chance to escape then.

Those are a lot of books there.  They might have great power inside, enough to escape!

That could take a long time, and we still need to get out of the cage to read the books.

Maybe one of the kids will break us out.

Yoink! might work to grab one of those books, if we turn one into a bauble and let it turn back into a book inside here.

Well, those are better, but I've got an idea now.  Let me try first.

Newton shakes out some feathers, enough to make it obvious there's something supernatural going on with them.  He then removes his book from his inventory, and starts writing, trying to open a dialogue with the scholar.

"Hello.

Do you know what you have managed to capture?"

Mira

"Fine, we'll drive the creature off and secure the Elder's Recess for further investigation" Mira said with a dismissive wave of her hand, "Where are the Wingdrakes? I'm ready to deploy at any time."

Kraken

The mercenary nodded, making a mental note of the heat. "Is there a place where we can get these drinks or equipment? Sorry, we kind of rushed out last time so didn't get much time to look around...."

"Some supplies will be waiting onsite, but you should be able to get more from the market. We'll keep track of the books on our end, so don't worry about the cost. The wingdrakes are waiting by the gate, whenever your team is ready. We've also parceled out your share of the Legiana, so you could take those to the smithy before you embark."

It takes a few moments for the scholar's attention to return to Newton, but his wizened eyes widen at the writing. "Fascinating. . . A bird that can write. Who taught you your letters, little one?"

"I am a spirit in the body of a bird.  I learned my letters as part of a quest for revenge against the wizard who slew me.

..But that is long in the past.  Now I simply travel, looking for interesting people and places and collecting items that grab my fancy."

'I can escape from here, but it would require me to lose this body.  I like this body, so I'd like to make a deal for my freedom.  I can help you create items or tackle hard problems, so I'm willing to trade a favor for my release."

"Maybe two if you'd do me a favor in return."

"I think I would like to speak with your weaponsmiths," Saejik says, "I find your ability to incorporate the abilities of the local wildlife into your equipment most impressive, and I think I would like to avail myself of those services.  Hopefully between us we'll be able to come up with some way to adapt your techniques to work with blaster technology."

Kraken nodded at Saejik's assessment. "Yeah, and to be honest, I feel like my weaponry wasn't really that effective against that... Legiana you called it? Feel a bit silly carting this thing around when everyone is probably doing better with the local weapons... Oh yeah speaking of, what are those things I keep seeing on people's wrists?" They looked to him like some form of armor, but there seemed to be anchoring points and some form of string on parts of it, not to mention that he was pretty sure they were used to attach to the flying creatures.

Brynn
"I shall be at the smithy if any others intend to go. There is much of this world's engineering I would like to see firsthand." With that said Brynn set off, hoping to get an idea how the reagents the other group gathered might be turned into finished weapons.

The party has a discussion with the Smithy, where the principles of a hunter's weapons are explained. Monster parts, like their share of the Legiana, can grant similar abilities to their original owners, like using Rathian barbs to make a venomous weapon. They're also sturdy in their own right. Their engineering seems a mishmash of solid, but archaic techniques and a few highly advanced technologies that looked distinctly out of place.

Unfortunately, there isn't much time. You'll have to come and speak with the forgemaster after your current task.

Soon enough, the party is loaded up on wingdrakes (several for Brynn) and shuffled off to the Elder's Recess with cool drinks in tow. A winding path leads into a cavern system, and sure enough, there are spikes embedded in the walls.

Newton remains caged, as the scholar informs him that he can't just let a specimen like him go, even one that spouts creative nonsense like this talk of wizardry.

Kraken

The mercenary frowned looking at the spikes. He couldn't tell if this was a trap, the beast was injured and used the wall for support, or if it simply couldn't feel itself bumping into the wall... But all the same he tried to pull out a few spikes for later. They could make use of them or donate them after all.
