:D

Yep, the key difference is this exists and is in active development.

Hm, it looks interesting, but I'm worried how long it will get developed before the dev moves on to another sequel.

Ah, the days when I could just plunk down $20 and not be worried about it....

Dev has stated he intends to work on it for at least 6 months but longer if funds permit it.

Ultimately it depends on how well it sells. I doubt there'll be a similar game following this one unless it performs well and certainly not in the near future.

Exactly why I'm not purchasing until it comes out of Early Access. Shadows Behind the Throne 2 had a release date of 7/25/21, and to go to an EA only 3 months later (dropping all support for the prior game) is a bit off-putting, to say the least. The demo didn't really call out to me all that much either, really rough around the edges.

Have enough games with unfulfilled promises to last me a lifetime still waiting for completion in my library. Really hope I'm wrong, but six months does not seem to be enough time to bring it to what I would hope it to be, given the rather large shoes it claims to try filling from TWS.

Those statements are contradictory.

Statement #1:

Dev has stated he intends to work on it for at least 6 months but longer if funds permit it.
Thus, work could be expected to cease shortly after 6 months if funds do not permit further work.

Statement #2:

Performing well could lead to a similar game.

Statement #3:

and certainly not in the near future.
But, as per statement #1, work could cease shortly after 6 months.  And, Devs need money, so what is the Dev to do after those 6 months? (hint hint, same as here perhaps and make another game?)

...my apologies for being a bit of a jerk here.  Just trying to foster some healthy skepticism.  I mean, I'm tempted to throw my money into this.  The new game is enough of an incremental improvement for me, and many indy game studios follow a similar model.  It'll be easier to swallow if/when the dev makes a second game to incrementally improve when they're not developing a sequel to this one.

I speak to the dev on a regular basis. I know this isn't his career, it's a hobby project really. The dude is getting a PhD. Hence the roughness around the edges. Hence the lack quality marketing.

Whilst skepticism is healthy I think if you appreciate that this dev isn't out to make a quick buck, and is literally creating the game because fans (of TWS) begged him to, it helps put things into perspective. He has put his life, his PhD stuff on hold to give this hobby project a real go. If the game succeeds particularly well, I've no doubt he will focus on this (and maybe a sequel one day) for much longer than his current savings permit. The dev needs to pay bills and if sales from this don't allow it he'll have to do something else that does when savings run low.

If you haven't already I'd recommend watching some YouTube videos of the game, join the discord (the dev literally posts there every day) and see how you feel then.

Personally I've been having a blast with the game and I hope it does well because it could develop into a true TWS like game. If it does very well it could even spawn a new subgenre of TWS-likes.

Anyways hopefully that gives you a bit of background and helps you reach a decision.

Edit - and when I say 'I doubt there'll be a similar game following this one unless it does well' I don't mean THIS dev won't make another game. I mean there won't be any TWS-like games because we, the market, would have shown there's no demand for them. So paradox won't jump on the genre, nor will any other studios or devs, either.

...I totally see Paradox jumping in at some point and releasing a similar game.  The market has show some enthusiasm at this point, I think.

Also, my skepticism is mainly focused towards trying to talk myself OUT of buying this.  It frankly looks AWESOME.

Up front, I just want to say that I've already bought this game, and am also a hobby developer.
Having said that, if you're trying to alleviate concerns that the dev might abandon development/decide to make a SbtT 4 rather than continue to work on this game, reminding us that he's a hobby developer who has priorities above the game in his life isn't going to assuage any concerns.

Ultimately, it comes down to whether you want to play this game right now, or possibly play this or some other hypothetical game in the future.

I've also missed out on opportunities to play games.  I'm still kicking myself for not buying into the demo of NetGain, that Level Zero game based on Shadowrun.  Even if it wasn't much, it still seemed just so awesome.  :'(

It's another one on my list of potential future hobby projects to remake (though I should probably get Only War someplace reasonable first). I'm still salty that the dev never sent me my copy of his board game he owned my tier of backers... somehow, that burns more than not finishing what he promised, because it was a product he already had! I had the alpha version of Net Gain, but lost it in a hard drive shuffle, which makes me sad.
