[IC] Arknights TD: Contract #1 - Refinery Security
« on: July 25, 2021, 09:04:41 am »

Halstad, Columbia
Industrial District
Operational Crew: Blitzgott, Ramiel, Casimir, Stasi
Time: 6:00 AM

On entering the city and signaling their employer, a nondescript and utterly unremarkable vehicle pulled over to pick them up. They spent only a few moments in the open air before the doors of the van opened; Halstad seemed to be a fairly normal Columbian city, with occasional towers jutting above the skyline. The city was composed of six moving sections; normally this wouldn't be particularly noticeable, but a Catastrophe was predicted to hit in approximately three months, and so preparations had already begun to get it moving. The bustle of the crowd barely allowed them into their ride, but the din died down as they entered.

Unfortunately for Ramiel, the vehicle was more remarkable on the inside. Namely, it had been up-armored, and this shrank the cabin space a fair bit for what was already a tight fit. "I'll be taking you to the offices shortly." Their chauffer was a diminutive Zalak with a stolid demeanor. "Please note that at Nonex, we do not tolerate threats to executives or staff, and offenders will be dealt with appropriately." The man fell silent after that, not responding to any attempts at small talk or questions about the threat.

They passed their way through the Infected districts on their way. While Columbia was much better to the Infected than other countries, a slum was still a slum, and this one was unmistakable. It was no coincidence that it was directly adjacent to the industrial zones, and in fact actually buffered it from the commercial. Their destination was right on the border between these and the much more well-kept corporate offices. The van stopped in front of a towering metal-and-glass building with an equally massive logo emblazoned on the front face. The logo was not, in fact, Nonex's, but that of an office supply company.

Another individual, a cheery-looking Liberi with a bit of brown plumage and a skip in her step, came to escort them inside. Their driver pulled away after the various party members were squeezed, folded, pressed, and otherwise extracted from the vehicle that had clearly not been chosen with operators of their size in mind, moving toward the large parking structure adjacent to the office. "Sorry for all the running-around, but there's been some unfortunate happenings lately. I'm sure you can all handle yourselves, but it's best to be safe, right?" The way she looked at the party indicated that their safety was not the actual concern.

The interior was more or less as expected; thankfully, there was actual headroom for the taller members of the group here. They were escorted past a confused-looking receptionist and into a windowless meeting room that branched off the main hallway. Once inside, the Liberi moved to the end of the room and eyed each of the members in turn, sharp golden eyes seeming much more intense than the rest of her. "I'll start with introductions." She gestured to herself, holding one hand toward her chest. "Vaike Sunderford, head of security at the branch here in Halstad. The cheery guy who brought you in here is Anelace; he'll be assisting by maintaining contact between your team and myself. I've heard some little about Cutting Edge, but nothing on the individual members." She left the implied question hanging as watched the quartet, waiting for their answer.

Casimir clears his throat, the car ride and various warnings and threats (implied or otherwise) having made him more than a little wary of opening his mouth, but the threat of Ramiel or Blitzgott starting introductions off was more than enough to make him get over the fear of misspeaking. "Ah yes, that doesn't surprise me. We only just recently had some newer recruits, never mind the fact that we're a rather new company. I'm Casimir, from Kazimierz, I'm one of the founding members and specialize in close combat as well as having an eye for picking out small details. The Sankta is Ramiel, the Oni is Blitzgott, and the one in the armor is Stasi. I hope we can prove that we can get the job done here and do so in a manner that's more than satisfactory for both our groups." He leans back slightly in his chair side eyeing the others to see if they have anything to add, and praying it would go over well if they did.

"This van is....rather small. And my bones are not what they used to be. Excuse this old man."
Ramiel stretches out his back with a fierce, hearty grunt, standing out of the way for a moment. Truly, it was times like this he could feel his age. In his youth, spending long times cooped up in vans and small transports was well within his physical capacity, but wear and time had taken their toll.

A crack, and he could feel himself become a little sprightlier. He faces Vaike with a big grin, now not feeling so old.
"Aha! Where are my manners, Miss Sunderford? Ramiel, at your service."

Stasi for their part, settled on standing near the rest of the group, both out of a desire to remain on their guard, and to avoid bending one of the chairs under the weight of their armor. "What exactly can we help you with?[color]"

Blitzgott, who was standing in a contemplative pose with his good eye closed, chuckled at Stasi's words. Hooch had given him explicit instructions that he was not to be the first member of the team to speak up in front of their employer. He figured that being last was safe enough.

"No doubt, something difficult and Dangerous. Slinking shadows and secretive enemies abound, almost certainly. It is well, for this Hand of mine trembles with desire to do Battle against foes most foul!" After a pause, the oni added in a more reasonable tone "Or something of the sort. Surely a corporation such as Nonex would not hire mercenaries for routine night watch."

"I see." Her eye rested on Blitzgott for the moment; the oni was an odd sight, to say the least. "Well, I'm sure we'll get some more information on your capabilities through the course of this job." She nodded, then sat, managing to make that simple motion flashy as she tossed herself back into an office chair. "I'll cut straight to the point, then. We expect whatever faction has been sabotaging our facilities to carry out some kind of large operation tonight. Your job is simple: stop it, and ensure it doesn't happen again. Every inch of Originite that disappears from our facility disappears from your pay. If you can. . . persuade one of the perpetrators to talk to us, that would be even better."

A map of the facility (with several areas cross-hatched out to hide their precise layout) bloomed to life on one wall. "Most of our perimeter is secure. They've been testing our security and I believe they've located a weak point near the south entrance." The map zoomed in, showing a dense network of catwalks, shipping lanes, and machinery. "The entryway they need to access the refinery proper is here." A square on the map acquired a blue highlight. "And we've identified likely approaches." Several red squares appeared, all roughly opposite the blue. "You'll want to take some protective equipment. . . if it's not already too late for you." She eyed Stasi (and Blitzgott, again.) "We try to keep it under control, but sometimes a bit of Originium gas escapes. Be careful!" This last was delivered in a jarringly friendly tone, the woman veering back into the friendly persona she'd shown initially. "Any questions?"

Casimir looked over the map for a few more moments before nodding. "Do you have any idea who's been conducting the operations? It could be helpful to know what to expect ahead of time, though I have some ideas." Likely would be heavier armored troops due to protective equipment, assuming they weren't already infected. That said, even if they were the gas would likely deter them as oripathy in the lungs could be... unpleasant. If it was to be a large scale operation as was said as well, they likely would have casters for support, meaning all manner of drones and wildlife, likely a majority of the forces being that if the main goal was sabotage still.

"Always happy to help, but uh....protective equipment, yes? Where will that be? Also, do you have any idea of why they might be targeting your operation? Like my friend here says, it might help."
