Wouahou. a 3D Rogue like with that kind of view would be quite cool. But is it possible to display that ?

Maybe a mode with Two/three part screen :
- top view eberything below you is in 2 grey and black
- a "side view" such as the drawings above on the x axis (where your cursor is located)
- a "side view" such as the drawings above on the y axis (where your cursor is located).

Hmm, I think that tonight I will try to draw a small demonstration ASCII 3D navigator to see if it is possible. (How long would it take to build that ? ... good question)

Why can't multiple levels be handled the same as they are in any roguelike? (ie: Have your dwarves build a staircase, then toggle either up or down to a new screen with the < > keys, and put your miners to work.)

I hope the three day weekend is productive for you Toady, both in class and on the game!

Three day weekend?  There aren't any holidays now (my university doesn't do Washington's birthday...  it skips some of the others too).  I'm also stuck grading exams.  Hopefully I'll have at least one day free.

What about Hidden Doors seen only by troops during war times.  They would have a % chance of being overlooked by invading monsters when they rampage through the dungeon.  Of course, some monsters are more observant than others, and higher quality work is easier to hide...

will it be possible to engrave ceilings?
and are large arches able to support more then a 7*7 area?

knowing my luck with the RNG i probably engrave every single ceiling with a dwarf falling down...

more examples:

code:

####################
###      ###########
 +_!____X~~~~~~~~~~~
#############~######
#       #####~######
+____   #####~######
#ò_@_\_ò#####X######
##########       ###
##########_ggggg_###

# rock
_ floor
+ door
X floodgate
~ magma
\ staircase
ò lever
! noble
g goblin
@ leverdwarf

in the example above you see:
1 a nobles room
2 2 floor tall military command center
3 a tunnel being invaded by goblins

now that would be fun

edit: typo

Not really.  Anything you throw down there is effectively 'gone'; it's going to be too far away for whatever miasma it produces to cause problems.  Plus, you could occasionally send dwarves down to dig through the bones or whatever...

Although, if objects tossed to the bottom of the chasm still exist, the game would have to by default keep dwarves from being assigned to haul them, unless you assigned a 'fetch object from bottom of chasm' mission or something.

Just assume there's a point where a dwarf can't go any farther because there's nowhere to stand - Like that massive, empty underground chamber in Two Towers where Gandalf smacks around the Balrog.

Edit: I forgot my point.  Lawl.  Ahem - Yes, if there's no place for a Dwarf to stand/walk, can't get down to the chasm'd stuff.

We must build a super computer powerful enough to run the new Dwarf Fortress.

Such a project will certainly take a fearsome amount of bones, leather, and green glass.

This is a copper supercomputer.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  The object is adorned with hanging rings of copper, tin, goblin bone and aurochs leather, encircled with bands of tin, rock crystal and rope reed, and menaces with spikes of tin, green glass, and goblin bone.  On the screen is an image of an elephant and a dwarf in ASCII.  The elephant is striking down the dwarf.

I can't say I like the idea of different elevations. It seems like it would greatly complicate things when it isn't really necessary. "You can't make a moat there, its a hill!". I suppose a great deal of this wouldn't matter inside, since I'm assuming the dwarves could make level floors.

The game doesn't need to be perfectly realistic, I don't mind having sheer cliffs. If you really had a problem with the walls of the cliff being straight, maybe make a bit of rock that surrounds the cliff face have grass under it when mined away and it's assumed that once you get past that type of rock you hit the stuff that's high enough above the dwarves that you can actually dig into the mountain.

As for not being able to travel around mountains in adventure mode, maybe simply make a sort of 'wizard adventure mode' where you have no hunger or thirst, and maybe even the option to revive your character if he gets ripped apart. It would probably be pretty fun to be able to run around the world fighting things without having to worry about that.

You're doing a hell of a job Toady.

I don't get what you mean about this, in terms of 'being immortal = something about cliffs'.   Please elaborate?
