Aluminum weapons would not work well. Even with regards to bending and wear good quality steel is far superior and much easier to come by for anyone who doesn't have gigawatt+ electrical generators on hand.

ALuminium is highly useful. The problem with using it in the DF setting is its advantages counter problems that do not exist yet.

For one aluminium rusts, but only to coat itself in a protective layer of oxide. Iron on the other hand and some types of steel will turn right back into iron oxide given enough time and lack of maintenance. Secondly aluminium can be very easily recycled, but seeing as if we do get our hands on some it will be a tiny pile of flakes that is hardly an issue. Some types of aluminium alloy are very strong and fit for light armour, but we have yet to deal with alloys in general and all we would have to work with is plain aluminium.

Thinking about tamable fire spirits, it would be nice if we could tame different types of beast for different kind of operations. There's the already mentioned example of taming a fire spirit to smelt aluminum. A special kind of smelter would be needed that required for it's construction a tamed fire spirit or maybe just a caged (in a steel cage) fire spirit.

Another example would be mills that only required tamed mules or horses to work instead of a running source of water. Maybe enslaved trolls could be used for opening bigger gates or carry war-machines (hint: LOTR). Talking about slaves, we need slavery! Being able to capture slaves and use them to do menial works to free up dwarves for administrative tasks.

Like using a tame dragon in a trap : instant flamethrower. Could also be used for cooking.

No, no, no, that's wood chucks, what chuck wood, but the real question is, how much would they be capable of throwing?

We talked about roofing a little...  somewhere.  You have to build an up or up/down stairway beneath the square in question, then you can add a floor from above (or that might just be on the list).  You could also use a bridge, but then you wouldn't be able to build on it.

Dwarves can fish in the ocean if you tell them to, but I'm not sure they'll catch anything.  The ocean critters are working strangely right now.  I've seen walruses on a beach, but it also beaches all the whales.  I think.

As for cobalt, cobaltite is one of the rocks, and perhaps others are cobalt ores I don't know about, but cobalt is not in the game.  Later it might be used to impart color (cobalt blue?) though I'm not sure when or how at this point.

How do you plan on dealing with larger animal sizes?  I'm sure you've already considered that whales could quite easily take up more than one tile.  Could you represent a bigger creature like this?:

4 tile whale:
W+
++

6 tile whale:
+W+
+++

9 tile whale:
+++
+W+
+++

This isn't to say that there would be all of these variants so much as to give you an idea of the scheme of increasing creature sizes.  This could also apply to other large creatures (e.g. dragons) which might not be able to fit down smaller passages in the mountain.  This in itself could give rise to many interesting situations, a dwarf escaping a marauding dragon by reaching a single-tile safety tunnel for example.

Yeah, not to bring up the "just how big ae those tiles, anyway?" argument, but really, it can get ridiculous! An elephant can't chase a dwarf through a doorway not even large enough for a cart! I know that "carts" are creatures, and they already take up more than one tile, so can the same thingy happen with Es and Ds? And, of course, Ws?

Defending the fortress and preparing dinner -- at the same time! Just have to convince your dwarves that the "mystery meat" is delicious.

I was a big dissapointed that other creatures weren't larger then a single tile, like dragons and collosi, and yeah, elephants! Full grown elephants could at least be 2x2 in size, that'd make you think twice before letting them into your fort.

Tentacle demon:

code:
\'/
~%~
/'\

etc.

Elephant:

code:
EE
EE

... or a single E in the middle of a border... then again, with graphical tilesets in... it'd just be a single large graphic centred in the middle of the tiles.

The larger monsters could smash down walls or loose rock in your fortress to make space for themselves.
