But what aluminum was good for in those ages? Aluminum swords? I think the wooden swords those pansy elves carry would break them. And I don't think dwarves like to drink their beer from cans smaller than their jugs.

Aluminum would be good for flagrant displays of opulence and wealth.  "So, you have a road paved with gold, eh?  Did you have to HARNESS A DEMONIC ENTITY WHO WISHES OUR INEVITABLE DESTRUCTION in order to make it?"  You could make crowns and scepters and things with it.  Lightweight for added comfort too.  Be the envy of all the other civilizations!

uh, yeah.  thats pretty much it.  aluminium was used in some very rare coins and was - for a short time - considered more valueable than gold.

what we REALLY need is chromium so we can alloy it with our steel.  or stud our elephant leather jackets with it.  of course, that will just be a prelude to steam powered motorcycles.

The dwarfs can work with adamantium.  Remind me again why they are incapable of smelting aluminum?

Lack of ability to process and refine the stuff.

That and, like mentioned, the hottest thing you can find to smelt the stuff for you is to capture a spirit of fire. Melting aluminum itself takes roughly double what the magma flow can put out, assuming the magma flow has a fairly average real world temperature.

Looking at the facts though, Adamantium is ridiculously easy to work. It can easily be worked cold, for one, and seems to produce better than normal quality results for the skill level of the person crafting with it.

then again, when weapon wear gets implemented (if it's not put in yet), the aluminium weapons would take longer go bust after being damaged - it's rather easy to bend aluminium compared to eg cast iron, but will deform for longer before breaking - ie it's shorter to get to xaluminium swordx, but longer to get to XXaluminium swordXX and down from there  ;)

(I had the test results from lab session last week, but had to hand them in.  Some kind of internal assessment...  :p )

his right kidney has been poked out!
his liver has been mangled!

jack johnson, raider has been shot and killed.

The above (including bbcode) neatly weighs in at 255 characters. Fallout meets DF

Which makes me wonder. If you can smith adamantium cold with your bare hands, how can it block any weapon in any way?

Electricity, dwarves have not.  But with a little ingenuity, would filling a room with bauxite and luring a Spirit of Fire in there get some aluminum?</STRONG>

I tame all my spirits of fire.  Maybe if they like you they will make you aluminum, whats all the fuss for anyway beercans?

Didn't the ocean movie show dwarves fishing?

In anycase I think the new nobles will be great fun... For a change...

I feel that these drowning chambers may need to be decommissioned.

Historicially, what was refered to in sagas / myths etc... as "adamant", "adamantite", "meteorite iron" and dozens of other names was just naturally occuring iron with a very high carbon content (one source being ferrous meteorites of course). In a society that has not yet discovered how to make high carbon steel this produced stronger weapons and tools than was otherwise possible. In a steel making society (with all the inventions that entails) it is the same - or at best only slightly better - quality as "normal" steel.
