No, they add supports in and reinforce the rock as they dig! This strengthening process could be handled automatically and (for the time being, until Toady has an opportunity to revise it) the game could simply assume that every tunnel and chamber a player builds has been made safe by the miners.

I agree with this. When my first ever cave-in happened I thought "But don't the miners make it safe? If I walked through these caves, wouldn't I see wooden supports all around me?". Until I learned the 6x6 rule, I just figured better dwarves knew about supports while lesser dwarves didn't.

I wonder if the next release (or the one after) could include cave-ins, but only for floating objects. That way we can keep some of the realism, be prepared for any later changes to the rules while not making the fanstastic designs that would only ever see the light of day once.

Toady has said in the past that he doesn't like reading algorithm ideas here.  I made a thread in Suggestions for the cave-in discussion:

okay... what if you take a bird skeleton and a fish skeleton... and then merge them together... what properties would this skeletal creature have?

Hi!

I admit that I have no intent of reading through this entire monstrous thread, so if this has been explained in this thread, just point me to it and I will shut up.

With the z-axis added, I was wondering about the exporting local bmp feature. How will that work (if at all) with the new system (maybe save a set of number bmp, one for each z-layer?).

And if there will be such an export system, what about the DF Map Archive and its tools? Are there any plans to add the z-axis there as well (if there was some way to export all layers in the first place, of course)?

Status (08/13/2007): Next Release Task List: Not that you can fly in adventure mode without modifying the raw files. I'm not quite done with it, but I should be tomorrow and then I'll see if moving in 26 directions when you fly or swim is going to be almost impossible or just very painful.

I can see the adventurer mode log now:
Legendary human thrower tosses you at cylops.
You miss.
You hit a wall with your head.
It is badly damaged.
Your head exploded into gore.
You have been struck down.

We need more flying dwarves!  Everyone join together in the dwarf tossing contest.

That would be a bad way to do it if they are still bmps, considering they are 50mB each right now. 31 layers(at least[15 up, 15 down, plus the ground floor]) would be 1.55gB of pictures for each world.

I for one am incredibly excited about the next release of DF, but I am also concerned.  I have a very nice gaming rig, but I still get slowdown when dealing with flooding (or anti-flooding), even with relatively low populations (<30).  I downloaded the movies that are posted on the development page and gave them a gander.  They definitely helped me get excited, but one in particular (drain) got me worried.  As I mentioned, normal flooding slows my DF game down.  I can't imagine how slow it will become once we're dealing with things like draining and pumping.

I guess this is a question for Toady: Are my concerns valid, or am I worrying for nothing?

Maybe I'll try to have the OS stick to one core and let the second core belong solely to DF.
