I'm so excited about how much the mod community will be able to do with this new version. More info in the .raws, more info in the exported maps and the 3D view thing, it's really exciting. If another multi-month delay between releases ever happens, I think people will find it easier to wait out because the community will have more to chew on and develop between official releases.

I'm playing Black and White 2 these days, and it gives me so many ideas as I watch all the villagers scurry about. I just wish it weren't so buggy...

I moved my resigning fortress and travel limitations idea to the suggestions forum here

Hi!

Being constantly broke myself, I haven't donated yet. Still, I really love this game and am really thankful for it being available. Like most people here, I am all excited and waiting for the next version.

Personally, I think that handing out copies manually to alpha-testers would probably turn into a major hassle as Toady One would be flooded with requests. And the things would not work with the e-mail or whatever, and people would come and ask again. So uploading it seems the best option.

Usually, I see them use the terms 'stable' or 'release candidate'/'RC' to identify different versions and I think that could work fine with this game.

As for this thread, I suppose this monstrosity (and yes, I haven't read it all, because it is way too much for me) will be ended once the new version is released for testing. After all, a new bug report thread and then a new planning thread would be natural.

Well, besides that, there is really not much I can contribute to this thread. All the suggestions I have to make are in the suggestion forums or the dwarf mode posts (I am playing more fortress than adventure), so it would be mute to repeat them here. After all, Toady One does seem to check on all the things we are saying on the boards as is evident in the occasional clarifications given.

I only want to repeat as a final note on the future of dwarf fortress that I hope that the life simulation aspects (marriage, cats, social interactions, cats, religion, cats) will thrive in the future since they are the things I really enjoy the most in the game and which really sets it apart from most other games I know. I mean, we have dwarves that absolutely detest purring maggots!

Anyhow, thanks again for sharing this wonderful game with us. I am sorry that all I can currently give is that moral support, but believe me, it is heart-felt.

It's probably just that after 76 pages, everything worth saying has already been said at least once. We're pretty much all waiting for Toady to finish up so that we have something fresh to discuss (and play too, I guess).

Yes, with so little left to do before the next release is done, and what IS left being more technical stuff and/or putting things that were already there back into the game/getting them to work again, there's not much left to debate about.

We weren't finished with the buoyancy of skeletal fish.

And the "Consider Consolidating Nobles" in the to do list...

I think we should keep going 'till page 100!

And the discussion about how undead fish swam was very important.  Don't mock teh skeletal fish.

Speaking of skeletal animals, how would a skeletal bird fly? It's just bone. There's no way for it to create the force against the air it needs to have to rise.

If you're going to be like that, then, how would any skeletal animal work at all?  ;)

Well, it's fairly easy to imagine skeletal land walking creatures, because we can still see structure pushing against the ground to move.  Also, we can kinda picture them as robots, with bone instead of metal, and magic instead of hydrolics or motors or whatever.  We think of the magic as internal propulsion, not external propulsion.  But the magic can just as easily be the external propulsion.  It just requires a shift in thought.

Would cutting the wings off a skeleton bird stop it from flying, if the propulsion is entirely magical?  I'd still say yes.  The wings give the magic of flight.

Hmmm...

No, if a skeletal bird had it's wings chopped off, and the skeletal bird's ability to fly was derived purely from magic, I still say it would have the capability of flight. The problem is that a bird is born learning how to fly with its wings and tail. With it's wings gone the capability of flight in the form of magic is still there but the bird would, most likely, be unable to utilize it.

If a skeleton bird were on a treadmill and the treadmill was going at the same speed as the skeleton bird running, would the skeleton bird be able to take off?

If a skeletal bird was in the forest and a tree fell on it, would it make a sound?

(sorry, it was just too tempting  :p)
