Building floodgates into a water source shouldn't be too difficult, as long as you're careful about it. If you're about to break into an area filled with water, build the floodgate right in front of the wall, hook it up to a lever and open it, and then have a miner stand on the floodgate while he digs out the wall, and then just close the floodgate once the wall is gone. You should only get a bit of a leak, and possibly barely any if you build a normal door behind the floodgate.

* Randomly considers soul devouring and how it might pertain to DF. *

So let me list off some of the major changes to DF in this version.

- Z axis!!! with channel digging, mountain ranges, etc.
(now those dwarves arn't just dying... They're dying in 3d!)

- Seamless maps where you can walk from one side of the world to another without ever going onto the world map.
(if he/she needs food/water then they are not a true adventurer!)

- Now every location will be uniqueish with different magma/water/ore resources available.
(now volcanos will be appreciated for more then their farming land!)

- Site selection you can choose to start anywhere now
(so now the siege doesn't have to come to you anymore! Go dwarf super insta mega goblin spawny onto suicide mechanism!)

- Flows!!! ...
(one sec, got to go to the bathroom)

...

anyway

err

- More minerals and stuff, including petrified wood.
(what would dwarves be without more kinds of rock to enjoy and appreciate, YAY FOR ROCKS!)

- Fortress can now be made of ice.
(the fairytale parodies are now expanded past snow white)

- And many more features!
(say goodbye plant cheese bug)

Here's a mandate coupon. Can be exchanged for a truckload of magma at any floodgate.

Building material distance display!!

You might claim I have very few tracks in my mind...but this excites me very much.  It's a 'basic quality of life' issue!  I cheer for improvements to existing gameplay just a little tiny bit louder than I cheer for new features.

I don't get all the discussion over this.  It's very, very easy to solve the floodgate problem.  You just do this:

code:
####################===
              X  @%===
####################===

# = wall
X = floodgate (closed)
% = damp stone
@ = peasant dwarf with no friends or relatives and no useful skills who just arrived in the last wave of immigrants and was, for some reason, the only one with mining enabled when the damp stone was marked.  We hail this dwarf's noble sacrifice so that the fortress may live, to be remembered forever and ever, amen.  Party at the well after this is done?

Note that only one dwarf needs to be sacrificed.  After this, further additions to the channel structure can be easily made off of the tunnel outside the floodgate by opening and closing it for maintenance.  I'm sure the dwarf who gives up their life to set up the water channel will get a little engraving somewhere to remember them by.

There's another possible solution to the initial water access problem (depending on how things now work): dig out a chamber above the water source, dig hole(s) in the floor where you want the floodgate(s), sink the floodgate(s) from above (water can now flow diagonally, so you may need to block off multiple squares, right?), then dig out the last square of stone.  This would require the ability to install a floodgate from the next level up, which may or may not be possible in the game, but it seems like a sensible solution to me.
code:
#=stone
X=floodgate
.=floor
O=hole in floor
~=water
level x+1:
#####
#.O##
..O##
#.O##
#####
level x (before/during/after):
##~~~ ##~~~ ##~~~
##~~~ ##X~~ ##X~~
.#~~~ .#X~~ ..X~~
##~~~ ##X~~ ##X~~
##~~~ ##~~~ ##~~~

I haven't handled water flow directions yet, so mills don't yet require it.  If I get it working, they will.

It doesn't look at permeability of the rock type of an item yet, so you can still make them out of permeable rock.  Items can be covered with water at this point, but there's no real notion of them soaking their contaminants up.  Should probably consider it at some point.

The drinking entry probably involved the new drink area designations, although yeah, I also did some well changes that might fold into that.

Building floodgates from above is the main thing I haven't handled -- I imagine people want to be able to sink them into full squares, which you can't do.  They won't even build them from above a dry square, although I'm not sure how either of these should actually work.

Oh my gawd... A building material distance display. For that to work, the build menu needs to ask the building position / construction shape before asking what stones to use in it (which makes sense too!). With the confirmed rewalling and reflooring, that would very nearly make the game perfect.

I kid you. The game is pure lunacy, and with 3d it'll be exponentially more so.

We still only start with 7 dwarfs and it would be best to build a farm year 1 without killing any of them.

1) install floodgate
2) open floodgate
3) dig wall
4) wait for dwarf to pass floodgate
5) close floodgate

I was thinking that one could pump the water from the river into an overhead reservoir.  The reservoir would have an overflow drain at the top, which goes back into the river, as well as a manual drain at the bottom, which can be opened to perform maintenance work.

If possible, the pump would be powered by a water wheel, which would constantly pump water into the reservoir.  Excess water would drain back into the river, keeping the reservoir water as fresh as possible.
