How will magma forges and mills work? Will we need to place them a level above the liquid to prevent flooding? If so, how do we dig down into the liquid without the dwarf falling in? If not, how do we keep the room from flooding while the workshop is built?

Yeah, mills sit one level above the fluid.  Right now, you can dig channels from above and the side (even if thats a bit strange when there's a wall below that is also cleared), and I think all of the underground rivers have an open tile above the water in any case.  That said, I haven't yet fully handled the water availability problems so I haven't really checked to see how annoying all of this water management is yet in the context of an honest playthrough.

Do mills require water movement?

I don't know if this has been asked before here but what would happen if I dig out  a 3x3x3 section leaving a single rock cell in the middle. Will it stay there floating by itself or fall down? It's part of the stuff that will be handled by the new cave-in code?

Last I heard, even Toady doesn't yet know how the new cave-in system will work.  I know he wants it to be as physically accurate as possible, but that has to be balanced with memory and CPU utilization.

Will there be a water table implemented in the 3d version? Basically a point where if you dig a hole deep enough it will fill with ground water like how a real well would work. Or will we still only have underground rivers?

Just curious.

Yep, this has been gone over a bit.  Water table is in (er... right?).  Also, there is not necessarily a cave river where you place the fortress. Fortresses can be placed on any space on the map, and if you decide to try and build out in the middle of a desert with no mountains around, you will almost certainly not have a river.

Speaking of water tables, is it possible to seal walls etc against water table leakage?  That is, once you hit the water table, is there anything you can do to keep digging down, and build enormous deep fortresses?

I never seen so much commotion over an alpha, and toady we love your jumbled mess we dont care if things are not working the true df'ers know this is an alpha and we love it just the same. So please release your latest train wreck when you feel it is ready not before.

You know a game/software is awesome when it feels like the complete thing yet it hasn't left the alpha stage.

This is really how games should be done. They should be playable in every stage of their development no matter how many final features they lack. Other way they aren't different from vaporware. That's why even Toady seems stressed out by the fact he hasn't released a new build in six months. The more it's delayed the more it risks becoming vaporware.

You could theoretically wall off the aquifer the way things are now, but it would fill too fast for you to get the building job done.  So it's a similar problem to placing floodgates in full squares, which you also can't do now.  In any case, DF's water table only occurs in areas with permeable rock/soil layers, so you can't really depend on it being there.  When I'm addressing water availability in a bit, I'll see what I get to.  My main concern for the release is to avoid outpost placement in areas where death by dehydration is inevitable, at least without a warning.

I was looking through the Dev. Notes and one of the things is "finished up drinking". What's that supposed to mean?
