No rush Toady! I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.

I really hope that the river can be more then one layer deep at some points, not specified where, so when you are about to build a tunnel under you might actualy hit on off the a deep spot. Thats what i look forward to most. Sudden unexpected "f*ck water/lava!" when digging, and have to set up a advanced system to pump the water out/revert a river while trying to patch the leak up.

I'd just like to note that the list of things to be done no longer requires any vertical scrollbars whatsoever at my resolution.

Either great minds think alike or Fieari is just stealing my thunder   :D

So the rivers look great, with the exception of the really big one. A straightish curved line is what it feels like it should be.

I have a few questions about the videos.

1) Will the 3d tool seen here come with the game? It is realy cool looking and might help with fort design.
2) What's the difference between ramps and stairs?
3) What's the difference between a rock and a boulder?
4) What happens if there is a cavein below a tunnel or a pool?
5) Will we be able to detect water without digging into it? Being able to will be important to making a farm, as we will need to set up the floodgates near the river before breaching it.

1. I hope it's included as well; there's no reason for it not to be.
2. I dont think there is any, but an immediate one that i can think of is that wagons can only move on ramps and not stairs, while stairs will be deathtraps to creatures with poor footing or missing eye(s)
3. A rock can be used to make a structure. A boulder cannot be; it also blocks pathing.
4. It should be obvious that cave-ins will collapse the ceiling and whatever is above it -- possibly for several floors.
5. Yes, you will get a warning about finding damp /hot stone.

Ramps require slightly more space to set up, if I'm not mistaken from the various videos.  I seem to recall Toady saying that Dwarves carrying stuff up/down stairs have a chance of tripping.

The thing is that Toady just made the 3D tool on a lark, and probably doesn't want to have to worry about maintaining it or ensuring that it keeps working with new versions.  I do hope he puts it up for download somewhere when the new version is out, but I assume it won't be part of the main download...  it'd be more of a side thing for those who are interested (and realize that it's not being maintained.)

Of course, who knows?  Maybe Toady has incorperated a 3D viewer into Dwarf Fortress itself and has been keeping it as a surprise from us.  Unlikely, but you never know.  :p

The screenshots of the tool seem to suggest it's a part of the game system itself.  Probably accessible via hitting tab a couple times, like the current (useless) minimap and the command reference chart.

That minimap is definitely not useless- try playing on a haunted map with skeletal elephant herds that roam about, and you will see what I mean.

Skeletal elephants are no match for the blood of the earth itself; magma.

Pretty sure toady mentioned somewhere that the 3d thing was still in there. At least still in the code...
I'm not sure if we can access it, although he may leave it bound to whatever key he had before. Like f10 or something.

About the 3d Utility :

Toady One: It'll be there, but like many things it'll increase in utility only very slowly and won't receive attention over long periods of time.

Found in this thread http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000896

Also about the bridges, it would be nice to get some input from Threetoe about it, since he's the history guy  ;)

A not-too-deep, not-too-rough river of any width can be bridged by a civilization that is determined enough--just drop down regular columns and build an arch bridge composed of a series of arches, which can be of arbitrary length as long as you can keep sinking columns into the river.  (The Romans, say, could bridge almost anything they encountered using this technique.)  With large enough supports, unlimited materials, free manpower, and an awful lot of time, you could bridge the English Channel like that if you really wanted to.  Certainly skilled masons like dwarves should be able to bridge almost any river they'd encounter in the DF world.

The hard part is building a suspension bridge of decent length.  Suspension bridges have numerous advantages; the main one is that they can be built to an arbitrary height above the water, allowing boats can travel under them.  They are also cheaper and easier to build, require fewer materials, and can still hold heavy weights.  Most of these things, though, aren't pressing issues to dwarves.
