Water hardens magma, and it doesn't take very much. This is because it doesn't track the magma's current temperature -- if it did that, it would just cool off and not work as people want it to work in terms of violent weaponry and so on. I might look at it more later on. Right now it's fairly simple of necessity, but you can cool it off with water contact.

I think it would be best eventually for magma to cool on its own in channels... right now its just a little too silly that you can make a magma channel where the magma stays perpetually hot.  Its just a little too powerful, too.  When the time comes, I hope there isn't too much whining about not being able to make a magma moat, but I would rather have a more true to life simulation in this regard.

Only if it's stagnant. If it keeps moving, it should be fine...

Heheheh, it developes a thin layer of obsidian on the top, and if someone too heavy steps on it... SHWEEEOOOOOOSH.
Gone.  :D

Are there gunna be earthquakes where magma is situated? becuase volcanic activity is very close related to earthquakes..what with the plates and all.

As I see it, in DF magma is a gameplay device, it has nothing to do with realism.  While fluid simulation would be nice if it means we don't have magma in the game because it would be "unrealisitc" then screw realism.  Dwarfs Elfs and Goblins aren't realistic either.

Agreed. Magma should cool down in the channels and become hard over time, even without contacting with water. Perhaps dwarves should be able to remove the hardened magma from the channel, thus making a new defense mechanism again using the same -cleaned out- channel.

I may have missed it, but what's the status of the dwarves' fire-awareness?  Will they refuse to haul burning items?  Can they run for the river or a well to put themselves out?  If not, are any of these things planned for the next release?

You are a lifesaver! Round and probably in tropical flavors.

A channel that spins back around into the magma flow again would do the trick.

Try this out in the current releases for fun results!

But it seems to me that DF is a game trying to be consistent with itself. A fantasy world simulator must have a way to explain things. Dwarves Goblins, etc don't exist in our world, but they do in DF, so that's a difference. However, the laws of physics in DF are the same as in our world, so normal magma should cool lose its energy over time and cool down.

Yes, everything must have some logic in it, but No, even the laws of geometry don't have to be the same in a fantasy world not to mention some physics laws. As we have magic planned for DF it clearly would violate some of our world's physics laws.
And as for a possible semi-logic explanation to ever-hot magma - it can just have an (related to magic maybe?) internal source of thermal energy (like decaying isotope in our world) that stops to produce heat when placed in contact with water. It can rapidly cool down from that moment using the same in-game mechanism as all other thigs. Probably even solidify and become a very hot rock on the instant.

The dwarves in the new one currently ignore objects that are on fire for almost everything (hopefully everything, but I doubt I managed that).  They don't know how to deal with being on fire themselves yet.  Not sure if I'll get there.

Don't know how to deal with being on fire. Heh. Oh well, survival of the fittest.

Another thing that dwarves have problems with is swimming.

In my most recent moat it has become almost impossible to deactivate it for maintenance (I.E installing a new floodgate linked to the moat for the nobles quarters) and re-activate it without at least one casualty.

If the dwarves can see oncoming water and a bridge, can't they swim to the bridge? One of the most painful things to watch is a dwarf being one tile away from the bridge and then start swimming in the wrong direction.
