Only the Z-axis to look forward to? I think you're forgetting about traffic designations, non-permaflooding liquid physics, hundreds of new ores/rocks/gems, ability to start a fortress anywhere, do I need to go on?

No, the real thing I cant wait for, is the hundreds of almost implemented features that will come out within 2 months of the one with the Z axis.

I'm kind of excited about expanded adventure mode.

But the z-axis and new liquid dynamics are going to rock too. :)

I didn't get excited (too busy playing DF to examine the list closely) before I saw the movies. Woah!

These arcs excitte me:

RELATIONSHIPS ARC: You should be able to take a spouse, make a household, and create playable heirs as an adventurer. The dwarven relationships and personalities can also be expanded upon.

AFFILIATION ARC: You should be able to rise to the top of an entity (civilization, town, etc.) in adventure mode. While the full set of responsibilities that would entail will have to wait, it should at least be possible to attain this status for the first version. You should be able to do things for individuals. This could earn you favors from sleeping in their home and food gifts all the way to a marriage offer. There can be smaller entities like bandits and cults which could offer more unsavory tasks for similar privileges (steal, kill, kidnap, etc.). Can earn right to sleep in the large hall in town if you've become affiliated with them, but vagrancy needs to be punished and the camping must be harsher before this is meaningful.

SCENARIOS ARC: Character generation is due for a major change. The current plan is to have an interactive history generator that takes your character from birth to a playable age, incorporating them into the fabric of the world. Pressing "Play Now!" would answer the questions automatically, perhaps with a strong tendency to place you in dire/interesting situations. Related to Req214.

When will these Arcs be worked on, vaguely?

Blizzard is managed by dark sorcerers, and probably have enough money to bail-out the federal government.

FIRE AND LIGHTING ARC
The lighting in caves is artificial right now. It should be pitch black. This is also true of moonless cloudy nights. Once that's in, your adventurer will want fire. Fire can also come up in dwarf mode in various ways. Related to Core14 and Req96.

This got me so excited that I couldn't wait. :D

I agree with the general sentiment here, there is however a reasonable solution to the search problem (and one that would not be solved by moving to another board - all these systems have lame-ass search functions).

Yes, try searching for goblin tower.

Nice idea about that lighting but for now that would be a nightmare to calculate Z and creatures that are scared/attractd by light.

I hope that the ARCs related to DF will be worked on first. The vast majority of the people are playing with the DF mode only, Im pretty sure about that, including myself.

I was just reading through this thread, and a magazine I just got, when I found this. I think it would be able to run a world-fort on 256 Z levels.

with virtual memory, It could run a few world-forts at a time.

If I were to carve out an open room in second floor, and place a ballista there, would it fire down on attackers?

My impression was that the z-layers are separated by rock (inside the mountain), only stairs and ramps connecting them.
