The way it seems, the only reason to get the next version is the Z axis.
And the only other things worked on is the infrastructure for very fast future upgrades and improvements.

Someone hasn't been reading the news page...

Geology in the maps have changed, available fortress locations have changed, and alot of other things.

Dwarves can be ordered to fill buckets and then empty them at the desired location... Wells actually need a water source. YOU CAN CREATE A "CHASM HERE" DESIGNATION ANYWHERE YOU WANT!

Well, seeing as how the Z-Axis is the biggest thing I'm looking forward to, I don't see the problem.

Actually there will be lot of new stuff. Toady can't code 24/7, we all must understand it. Yes I would be the happiest to have military, armies, diplomacy etc, but its just not possible. The game is very complex, thus I bet that it needs hardcore coding work. 1 coder [even that Toady must be an awesome coder, as we can clearly see it, the proof is the game] is not enough. It is impossible to release huge updates 4-5 times / year sadly, as it seems.

1 more thing. If most of the stuff what is planned on the dev list would be added...frankly I must say, that this would become the best game in the history. I have tons of games, MMORPGs, RTS games, turn based strategies, FPS games etc...but even now that DF is very far from being complete, its already more addictive then most of my other games. Sadly now the game gets repetitive if youve played a lot since basically after you've beat the demons the game is over, but this ending is only lasts till we will have military, armies, diplomacy etc. etc. After that point the game will be more strategical, and it will be very different. I just cant wait for it.

I'd forgotten about PunBB; I remember setting up a test PunBB forum about a year ago and wasn't all that impressed. Looking into it, it seems like they've improved and cleaned it up quite a bit since then (haven't trialed it again though).
It looks like PunBB would definitely be better than SMF if you want a very slim and simple forum without any extras. SMF includes a lot more features though, like the good non-free ones (IPB and vBulletin). I admit to being partial to SMF though, it's the main forum system I've worked with and modded since moving on from phpBB. I have several SMF forums currently running.
The main thing I can say from using and working in the guts of them is that SMF is far better designed than phpBB. I don't know about PunBB.

Yeah, that's one of the SMF boards I was referring to.  ;)

To be honest, now that I've had time to reflect on it, I can think of one extremely compelling reason to start a new thread and start ignoring this one, or at least stop discussing anything remotely important or interesting in this one:

This huge thread makes it impossible to find discussions over any one topic.  It's ranged over all sorts of useful information for the upcoming version, and the only way to get any of that information is to read the entire thing from the beginning.  If it had been divided up into different threads, it would be much easier.

And, on top of that (and here is the real issue, and the main reason this thread has to die)--this forum's search function doesn't return results pointing you to a specific post, or even a specific page.  Nope, it just tells you what thread the hit was in.  If someone is searching for useful information about the upcoming version and gets a hit from this thread, all that will give them is an "it's in there somewhere, on one of those 65+ pages."

That's a fairly serious problem.  So while this thread is great for idle chatter, I'd like to ask...  Could people stop discussing gameplay in it?  To get down to the real issue, could people stop saying things that ar making Toady post useful information in it, and try to start many smaller threads for that sort of question-and-answer stuff instead?

Yes, I know that sounds like an awful request to make, and I feel slightly embarrased just to ask it, but right now, with things changing so quickly, Toady's posts and the question-and-answer stuff on this forum is often the best manual the game has...  as long as threads are short, it's easy enough to catch up with the search function.  In a long thread like this, though, all that useful information might as well be getting dropped into a black hole.  (Well, ok, not so much black hole as a really messy a pile of papers.  But you get the idea.)

With the forum's search function as limited as it is, long threads are very bad in the long term.  It's not something anyone is noticing now, but few months from now (or whenever the next version is out), when we're doing searches to find that helpful comment Toady made that we half-recollect?  Whoops.  It's somewhere in these 65+ pages; hope that helps.

This thread is already a disaster as far as that's concerned; most of the available information about the upcoming version has been shuffled into a huge pile that, by the nature of this forum, is going to be a horrible pain to get information out of.  We should stop before it gets any worse.

I havent tried it myself, but use google to search the forums.

Better cliffs is partly a feature brought on by the Z axis, and I didnt know about the buckets or chasm things. Any changes to adventure mode?

Nice point Aquillon... but there is a fairly easy solution. Someone needs to make a new thread which is a contents page for FOTF. It shouldn't be too hard, as large swathes tend to be about similar things, and the originator of the first post can update it as it goes. I'm a little busy atm but I'll see if that would work later

Maybe do it on the Wiki?  That way everyone can help update it.

It's sort of an odd thing to put on the wiki, but what the heck, the whole site is devoted to Dwarf Fortress, and this forum is pretty dwarf-fortressy...
