[SG] Heirs of the Abbasids
« on: July 13, 2021, 11:46:09 am »

((Maps courtesy of http://geacron.com, edited by me. I had to make up certain cities and events because this area is not exactly full of historical records.))

The hot desert sun seared over the deserts of the Tunjur Kingdom Of Wadai. The kingdom was poor even by the standards of the region-- and rife with religious tensions, as the local king, named Daud, was a pagan while a sizable chunk of the nobles and even the peasants were Sunni Muslim Arabs, a large part of them tracing their lineage to the famous Abbasid Caliphs of old who ruled the Libyan deserts and the prosperous floodplains of Egypt to the north.

On Al-Jum'ah Muharram 27, 1045 (Friday July 7 1635), Abd al-Karim Al Abbasi, an adventurer from an illustrious Abbasid family, entered the capital of Ouara with an army of horsemen from the neighboring Darfur Sultanate, laid siege to the palace, bribed the guards to open the gates, captured King Daud, and imprisoned him. The Sultanate of Wadai was proclaimed-- much to the delight of the Arab population but to the great dismay of the still-pagan Tunjurs.

A host of problems stands in the path of the young Sultanate: the terrible economic situation, powerful and potentially-belligerent neighbors, a populace full of unbelievers, especially in the rural areas. Will the Abbasid Caliphate rise again, or will this new state fall to an internal coup, invasion, or even colonization?

Send messages to our neighbours: "May Peace of God be upon you. The Pagan kingdom of Tunjur has been finished and a great thorn in way of prosperity and growth of the Word of God has been removed. These times are dangerous and the armies of devil continue their assaults from within and outside. Therefore, I, Abd-al-Karim Wadai, first sultan of wadai sultanate expect peace from you and you can expect that from us so that we may prosper." Then send messenger to tribesmen raiders that their doings are vile and unjustified and they should stop this and we will give them money to settle and will enlist them in our army. Refuse and be devilish and you shall be crushed under our army. Confiscate wealth from tunjur nobles and distribute it in local tunjurs as peace message. Attempt reparations to eastern economy with some gold. Appoint our own trusted men over daud so kill him and run away if castle attacked and no hope of victory.

After the dust more-or-less settled, the Sultan sat down on the copper-plated throne of the palace, and ordered scribes to write letters telling of the takeover to the neighboring states, as well as an ultimatum to the Azande raiders. International relations established! Raids stopped, at least for now. Meanwhile, guards loyal to the Abbasid faction raided the homes and estates of Tunjur nobles, distributing their wealth to both Tunjur peasants (who were at least prevented from revolting) and Arab nobles and peasants (cementing their support of Abd-al-Karim). This increased the country's stability but further angered what remained of the nobility. They are too weak to stage a coup for now. Meanwhile, caravans laden with gold are sent to the eastern villages near the Darfur lands. Economic downward spiral halted. Meanwhile King Daud is kept under strong watch by the most loyal guards.

Uneventful days turn to uneventful weeks... when suddenly, a traveler turns up at the gates of the Royal Palace of Ouara. He identifies himself as Seghen, a diplomat from the Kanem-Bornu Empire. Seghen informs the Sultan of a rebellion in the southern provinces of the Empire! Kirdi (a loose name for peoples of the region) tribes, unhappy with taxes and lack of autonomy, have risen up in an attempt to create the Kingdom Of Kono. The Kanem armies are having difficulties fighting the rebels due to guerrilla tactics, with even rumors of primitive firearms, perhaps traded for with the Europeans, being used. Seghen proposes Abd-al-Karim to intervene-- promising gifts of gold and soldiers if this is done.

Do the intervention
+1 but also in the meantime send a second diplomat on horseback to try to make it to the Sennar Sultanate alive preferably taking the safest route possible even if it takes longer should anything go wrong on his trip he is to turn around and report back with what happened rather then try to force his way threw.

We may want to send a diplomat to Darfur as well to negotiate some sort of non-aggression pact, as this intervention would give them a good opportunity to invade and we aren't on the best of terms.

Ehhh if we did that it would let Darfur know we are planning on sending our troops away for awhile and they may decide to invade us rather than accept any non-aggression pact. It may be better to get a guarantee of safety from Kanem-Bornu during our intervention rather than trying to form a non-aggression pact with Darfur

+1. We aren't sending our whole army so we can at least expect that Darfur will take some time to prepare for an attack. Then we can ask kanembornu to help us if that happens. Also ask the new man sent to sennar to first investigate about the matter in local populace as casually as possible.
