i7 4790
GTX 1070 TI
16 Gigs of Ram.

I do get a noticeable sense of my rig struggling in the open world sometimes when I'm turning the camera. And sometimes where you're running around, you can feel it loading stuff just for a moment but it smooths out almost immediately. So I can't say performance is "perfect." But mini dungeons tend to be very smooth for me and the open world is completely liveable with my specs at high settings.

It's 1:00 AM, I haven't showered or eaten and I have to get up in about 6:30 hours. Too pressed to really say much beyond this: damn it's good to be playing a Dark Souls game again. Elden Ring has met and exceeded my expectations in some places. It's not all perfect but I'll say some about that later.

But it was absolutely worth the wait.

I'm absolutely getting stutters at remarkably inopportune times. I'm willing to overlook it for my experience, but for something that could throw a fight outside one's control (or send one reeling off a cliff on horseback), I get the frustration. 32GB RAM, i7-something strong idk, 1080.

The game, uh, also technically doesn't 'close'? It's not possible to quit out of Big Picture Mode if you've launched Elden Ring using it, because the game is still running in the background somewhere. Maybe it's an EasyAntiCheat hook that doesn't give up the ghost or something.

I'm struggling to understand if my Steam Controller is fighting me or if Elden Ring isn't picking up its inputs well- clicking in on the left haptic pad (to navigate menus) also sends a left-stick-click, which means you crouch in the field and pull up the 'sort inventory' button every time you navigate, and the right haptic pad is largely ignoring my touch inputs, making swing the camera around a pain in the neck. Plus, it double-triple inputs on left haptic pad inputs, so I'm overshooting my flask/horse ring/etc all the time. Shame, too, I've quite enjoyed DS1/2/Nioh on this controller.

Oh, and you can't rebind menu buttons, so I'm essentially giving up on sorting and crouching entirely.

Currently level 17. I do not feel powerful. There's the boss fight at the entrance to the cast with Magni or Margit or whatever that is absolutely tossing my salad, which I'm taking as encouragement to heck off and find some better stuff. Bad dudes really don't give a lot of runes, so it looks like it's a whole lot more important to eat the items that give you runes now. I've got like a million fruits and flowers and I have not yet found crafting, only a refillable single-charge flask that gives buffs when you chug it. Seriously, hundreds of rowa berries.

More to see, more to slay, but I can't be sure if I'm supposed to be avoiding as many beasties as I am with how flimsy my weapon is, or if I've just managed to pinball into a whole bunch of unfriendly places.

I'm like level 15. I agree I also don't feel powerful, and that leveling up is expensive.

Consider though: you're introducing a lot of time where you're NOT earning souls due to the nature of the game. In Dark Souls, you're basically going down corridors and so the drip feed of souls is more consistent. With ER, you're running around a lot, looking at stuff, exploring, and dudes are generally worth less. (Night Cavalry only worth 2k runes? Seems a little on the cheap side....) So leveling is slower.

I kinda dig it though. I like the scarcity and the rarity, I like that slow burn to getting stronger.

I will admit, already, I feel a slight bit of open world fatigue. It's not that they didn't do a good job or make exploration worth it (the exploration is *chefs kiss*.) But there's a lot out there. And even though it's handcrafted, you can feel the need to fill that space. As a now 40 year old gamer, I would be lying if I said I don't feel a bit of fatigue thinking about it. They've done a good job of putting something in each place for you to find, sorta like "That ember in a dead end passage in Dark Souls 3." I suppose it's a minor complaint, but I'm still getting used to this new From Soft style.

I will say too that, they've got a good formula for being able to play Elden Ring in spurts. For me, I would never play a Dark Souls game if I didn't at least have a couple hours to sit down with it. Refreshing muscle memory, practicing and eventually beating fights, remembering level layouts and to-dos, and of course learning the bosses, that all was a significant commitment of time. It was hard for me to want to commit to playing Dark Souls unless I could *commit*, otherwise I didn't feel like I was getting anywhere or getting better at anything.

Elden Ring on the other hand....there's lots you can do casually in 20 minutes, an hour. A small mini-dungeon with a boss that is challenging without being ballbreaking. A little exploration, checking off a few boxes of things to do. So that's a pretty big change from classic Soulsborne gameplay. When you're doing a big marathon sprint, yeah some of these mini-dungeons and bosses feel closer to Skyrim than Dark Souls. But maybe that's what was needed.

All in all I'm loving it but still sorting out my specific feels about it.

Aye. It's fun and new for a Fromsoft title. It's just hard to know if, y'know, I'm doing it right, if that makes any sense? I can rove and jive but I'm still off-step to whatever the pacing is supposed to be, and since I'm still missing crafting, I feel like I'm missing a fundamental rhythm. I don't understand why I need these tarnished sunflowers- what kind of consumables, equipment, or otherwise am I missing out on, or expected to have as I traipse past superbears and scuttle down a well? What kind of a difference would they make?

Also, turns out that the controller issue is probably Elden Ring and not so much the Steam Controller itself, with mouselook stuttering as parsed through a non-mouse device- looks like I'll have to hang it up and reach for one of my old PS3 controllers. Shame.

The rhythm of crafting is largely intended for you to create consumables on the fly rather than having to find or visit a merchant.

So like half of the (truly bizarre) meat objects I've looted seem to go into things like Poison Resistance, Fire Resistance, Sleep Resistance, Damage Resistance, Damage Buffs, Arrows, Throwing Knives, Fire Bombs, Stamina replenishment consumables, weapon buff bundles. Stuff like that. Crafting isn't meant as a core component of gameplay, but more like a QoL thing where you're in a dungeon, you've run out of arrows but you have enough materials to craft them so you can get by without having to leave.

That said, the amount of resources they expect you to collect so you can meaningfully make stuff seems too high. I too have like 200 Rowa Flowers I'll never use because I never let Torrent get low on health, I just jump off and fight when it comes to that. So I'll probably never use those for making Health Pots for him, like they're intended. Meanwhile, after using every animal bone I looted in the ~6 hours I played last night got me a total of about 60 bone darts. If you wanna make stockpiles of consumables from crafting, you're going to be doing A LOT of farming.

Rowa fruits are definitely kinda pointless. At least you can sell them for a pittance of runes, I guess?
Bones are much easier to acquire en-masse if you buy a bow and shoot entire herds of deer from outside their detection range, but yeah, I think the game expects you to more or less constantly gather as you explore and use crafted resources somewhat sparingly.

I think you're on the right path. Just need to keep finding crafting recipes. Could come from bosses, found loot, vendors.

I guess...I'm not sure what your hang up is with crafting. It's just not that important unless you, like, use Fire Bombs, resistance mosses and arrows in every single encounter.

I'd just like the option to be able to use fire bombs and resistance mosses, mostly, especially since player progression seems to be so slow. A little something to 'splode the wandering droves of stony-spearguys I found down the well, some edible damage resistance would be nice too, that sort of thing. My consumable inventory consists almost entirely on like five fan knives and two summoning sign powders and one 'adds fire element temporarily' jelly.

I'm looking for a screwdriver but all I've got is a hammer, y'know?

...I don't suppose there's a menu somewhere that allows you to do this that I've totally missed? There's totally some kind of crafting box that enables it at bonfires, right?

Think you buy a box from the merchant you can find right at the start of the game, then you can craft stuff at any time from the inventory-and-stuff menu.

I'm super hyped to play, but goddamn I just can't. Loading times are often huge doozies, turning a death into me watching a loading screen for like a minute. Areas refusing to load in. NPC's refusing to load in. ENEMIES refusing to load in, but they're still there, just invisible, and I have to fight them without being able to see them. The collision map of areas also refuse to load in, completely barring me from progress, as I'll simply go to the area that the game is urging me to go, and then I'll fall through the map and die.

All of this on the lowest settings possible. My computer isn't bad, it's not great but it should be able to atleast load in areas and enemies!

I'm, uh, really hoping there's a substantial patch that'll let me actually play the game, and I didn't just blow 50-odd dollars to be able to play through the tutorial of the game and nothing else.

You should be able to get a refund from steam if it just doesn't work. Sure, it won't be automatic like the under two-hour refund, but from what I know steam is usually pretty good about it anyway.
i7 4790
GTX 1070 TI
16 Gigs of Ram.
AMD 3600
Nvidia 1660 (which is *just* below the recommended graphics card but also overclocked)
32 Gigs of Ram

It slows down fairly often (esp in boss fights), but it isn't that bad and is the type of slowdown where it stays pretty smooth somehow and gives me more time to react which can actually make it easier in some places. I also have it on not-minimum settings, presumably, if I lower everything down it should run much smoother.
That said I tried updating to the new graphics driver which touts working better with Elden Ring, but despite seeming to technically improve the framerate somehow made it worse and turned the slowdown into random "lol, you freeze for 2 seconds in the middle of a boss fight and die" which made me roll it back and now it works well again.

Yeah, about that, I preordered off a website called Fanatical, because they gave a small discount. I don't think there's a way to get a refund in that case, since I bought the key second hand. Unless I'm wrong about that.

I also just went through that.

I'm in some what of a similar position on the guy I'm currently stuck on.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Been doing some coop exploring/dungeoneering. Killed
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
three times with some friends. That fight is a lot of fun, like a lower-key Midir fight.

One question we've been banding about ourselves is, is this game easier than the previous titles? I think ultimately the answer is yes. I kept finding myself saying "Well it's not too hard because I'm a Souls vet and this is all very familiar and the muscle memory is already there etc....but for a NEWBIE, this would be pretty fuckin' hard."

After consideration though, I think you have to subtract out previous experience with the series and just look at the overall design of the game. It's easier by leaps and bounds. My best example is Spirit Summons. When playing solo they can take a tough mini-boss fight (where you're allowed to use them) to trivial. It's not true across the board, some bosses will trash your summons. I can't help but wonder though if Spirit Summons was an executive decision to give people in SP who were struggling a leg up. I often feel guilty about losing in a boss fight, remembering I have summons on the second attempt and absolutely smoking the boss. Beyond that though, the fast travel, the detailed map, the fast overland travel, no invasions pretty much as the default state, crafting on the go....the list kind of goes on. And tbh, I'm totally ok with it. I think it's easy to get carried away with the concept of "punishment = fun" and this more approachable Souls format is jiving with me.

I'm going to post a little somewhat spoiler-y list of core gameplay things you need to get before you set off into Limgrave. I feel the need to post this because after talking 3 other people through their first hour of the game, some of this shit is way too hidden for how central it is to gameplay, or the way they thought people would "inevitably run into it" seems a little flawed.

Spoiler: Spoilers, obviously (click to show/hide)

Lastly, I think the big meta of this game is breaking your foe's posture. By Jumping Heavy Attacks, Block Counters, Charged Heavy Attacks and, of course, parries. I've won so many fights that seemed ridiculous on the HP vs. Damage, Enemy Attack Style side of things. And what I found was just getting in a several jumping heavy attacks is enough to break posture even on large foes. Fully charged heavies also really do a shit load of posture damage. Whenever I'm struggling against an enemy, I start throwing Jumping Heavies. It's obviously subject to a lot of factors, and player-like NPCs seem harder to posture break than a lot of other enemy types. But it's won me fight after fight after fight.
