I thought my current fortress has no chance of growing a orchard, as it was almost all dead trees when I arrived. I cut those down and worked on other stuff, underground.  It's been about 10-15 years or so, and I noticed that there's loads of saplings up there, even some new trees. I'm surprised that dead trees grow back. All the info online seems to say they won't.

So obviously I thought how to enclose these trees in my new fortress. I'm currently engaging in some massive terraforming of the surface world, shaping it to my will. I'm thinking of channelling down one layer to give my trees a bit more space inside. I am wondering if its worth saving the muddy puddles at all? Getting rid of them could give me more space, but I am getting a lot of "all the fish are gone" messages, even in the river. Worried I won't be able to kick my fishing industry back into gear later if I get rid of all the pools.

There are currently two sources of dead trees:
1. A "natural" evil biome many have a 0-100% chance for trees to be dead.
2. A part of a biome that falls under the influence of a killing sphere (death + other similar ones) have a 100% dead tree chance.
If the dead tree chance is 100% all surface vegetation will be dead and none will regrow, but if it's less than that some vegetation will actually sprout and some saplings will mature into trees.

Injured dorfs in hospitals drink only water, and if you don't have any source of fresh water dorfs will get any water that's available (it's better than thirsting to death). There may be some distance threshold beyond which dorfs won't fetch water, and so select an inferior source, but I don't know if that's the case (and definitely not what the threshold might be if one exists). It's best to establish a well with fresh water safely inside the fortress to save injured dorfs (and satisfy the rare dwarven weirdo who's got water as a preferred drink). [It is possible to save injured dorfs without any source of water, but it involves a lot of micro management with establishing and removing of hospitals and traction racks].

Yes, ponds are different biomes from rivers.

I see little reason to keep a murky pool around when the fort's got a perfectly workable river, aquifer or cavern water.

That is an insane and dangerous plan.  I approve wholeheartedly.

Pond turtles, for those shell mood requirements. That's provided you can actually get pond turtles from those ponds, though, and that you don't have another source of shells.

Luckily, those don't turn up to often.  And pond fishing tends to lead to a lot of cancellation spam in my games.

Which is why I don't have my dorfs fish unless I've got a shell mood AND haven't gotten any shells through other means...
