GCS Woes
« on: May 19, 2021, 05:16:46 am »

I managed to capture a breeding pair of Giant Cave Spiders, but I wasn't yet in a position to set at a silk farm. So I left them in the cage, thought I'd get some practice in taming them. Game crashed once when one of them reverted to wild, so I put them in a pasture and thought they'd be taken care of. They weren't.

Both of them, fortunately, weren't hostile and were happy to be taken back to the paddock in the same area they always were, even though I couldn't move them to a new pasture as they were unselectable. Probably needed to recapture them in cages to restart the training. I simply locked them in the room and thought they'd get on with it by them selves. Maybe I'd check later and they'd be a little family or something. Turns out they die if left in a room for half a year or so. :(

Did you toggle the pasture zone to allow animal training?

Sometimes a male/female pair will not breed no matter what you do, but GSC are easy to catch if you put a wood door with cage traps in a few cavern layers.

When I attempt  breeding, I do not rely on on a couple of dwarfs... I put 6 to 10 dwarfs on Animal Training, picking dwarfs that often have free time, I do not want animal training jobs to be ignored because the animal trainers are all scheduled for three months of military training or are busy with an order for 200 rock blocks.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Yeah, it was a training zone, and I had EVERUONE in my fortress assigned to train. Initial training for fully wild creatures must be done in cave, so my two GCS has already erverted so couldn't be trained.

I was more concerned with the crash that happened when one of them reverted to wild state when it was in the cage and by the odd behaviour, neither being tame nor aggressive, not showing up on lists etc etc.

I also was surprised that the wild spiders died when locked in a room. Thought they would just mope around there until I was ready for them.

No real matter though.

If the room is small enough they may get into fights (try to lock a pregnant cat into a single tile room) until one of them is dead.

It wasn't THAT small, plus both of them died. Just two piles of chitin in the middle or the room. I already caught a few more and am nowhere near ready to start mny silk farm, so no biggie.
