Support from trees?

Currently Working on improving my drainage for my fortress by building a huge multi level sewage tunnel. Trying to collapse some floor in the caverns but it refuses to go. The only thing I can find that MIGHT be giving it support is a bunch of tunnel tube fungi beneath. CAn trees support roofs? Will I have to cut down all the trees first? With Urist McTreechopper getting squashed when it gives way?

Yes, at least the trunk tiles do. This is useful for building treehouses.

Thanks. Guess I'll be venturing back to the 2nd cavern layer. I was hoping to just smash everything from above. :(

I'm pretty sure that heavy branches work as a support too.

Did once a, um, embark anywhere on a elven forest retreat and realized I couldn't fell trees there. So, proceeded to fell the trees by causing cave-ins and soon noticed that the tree branches connected to neighbouring trees' branches were preventing collapsing. So, I dug more and more and more... Until finally something collapsed on the surface and the ground was littered with the corpses of elves that came falling down with their tree homes.
