Most Dwarf Fortress-y song from a Non-Fantasy game?
« on: May 08, 2021, 08:21:56 am »

To you, what are the songs that most scream 'Dwarf Fortress!' without actually being from any games that involve fantasy or dwarves in any significant fashion? Personally, it would be Prelude in C Minor from Ib; but, I'd like to hear what others think as well!

I’ve never heard it myself, but my 12 yo assures me that the song “Diggy Diggy Hole” (if that’s even the right name) would be a good fit for DF.

I was under the impression that Diggy was written about Dwarf Fortress....

I like singing Cows With Guns transliterating the words for my dorfs.
"We will fight for bovine dwarven free-ee-dom,
and hold our large heads tankards high,
we will run free, with the buffalo wereleopards, or die! Die!
Cows with guns
Dwarfs are fun..."

Tchaicovsky's Dance of the Cygnets from Swan Lake brings DF to my mind when I hear it.

Somehow I also feel about this. Maybe it's because the music is sometimes used in comic acrobat shows or animal shows.

Yeah it was Minecraft, but that song feels far far more like Dwarf Fortress.

My confusion would be because they don't carve story engravings showing the history of the fort into the walls in Minecraft. Or have family migrate to their fortress... Or have dorfs wearing cat leather clothing... And the official video of the song shows these things well known for being in Dwarf Fortress, not ever found in Minecraft. So I figured it was about Dwarf Fortress.

From general music, well, obviously this...

(In the opposite direction, I'm quite likely to think of DF whenever hearing any spanish-guitar 'ramble'.)

Oh, yes, no doubt they were heavily influenced by Dwarf Fortress when they made this. It's not literally about either game (was it something someone was humming to himself as he dug holes in Minecraft? I forget the legend).

Iirc it's something that Honeydew/Simon (member of the Yogscast, the people who made this vid) sang in one of the early videos of their minecraft playthrough. It then became a meme of sorts and spawned a first music video, and some years later that music video got a revamp/total reimagining in the form of the video above.

Congratulations, you got this lurker to register at long last! I have a lot to unpack. Unless a specific song is stated, the artist generally gives me DF vibes. Example lyrics included.

Weirdly, this song from Warframe *feels* pretty dwarfy.
