Gobbos not attacking my fort.
« on: April 17, 2021, 10:41:19 pm »

I am at war with them and at the world map im only a tile away but 3 years on they're still not attacking me even though I'ved been pillaging their pits. Any ideas as how to get them to attack me?

My problem is that they turn up every year, take a quick look, and run immediately. They get announced at the edge of the map, but they never progress more than a few paces into my map before retreating. Craven little bastards... I have a military of six dorfs on this map, and that looks like it's all I'll ever need.

The player fortress isn't the center of the DF universe. This means that the gobbos might decide that it's more interesting to attack other sites. Also, a site has to have a sufficiently large population to stage an attack, as attack forces currently are drawn entirely from the staging site's population.
Because of this, I use Legends Mode info to ensure the gobbo neighbor has a healthy population, with their dark fortress close to my intended embark location and no other sites closer to them than that embark.

Hello/goodbye sieges have been a problems since at least 0.40.X. The few I have been able to examine with DFHackery have had fewer than 10 members. It's a very small sample, but it might be that somehow DF manages to send sieges with too few members and they then flee in panic as they realize they're too few once reaching the embark. It can be noted that sneaking invaders can be fewer (such as one or two kobolds or necros), and I've had necro sieges where the forces fled immediately, but the necro(s) remained sneaking (and fleeing only when detected).

After posting this. Shortly, gobbos attacked me three times in a year. I use the meph tileset + the launcher which I had set the gobbos to invade very early. I dont know if it had an effect but now I had !FUN! and lost my fort to both gobbos and a Forest fire breathing titan.

The ones that get announced then only enter by a few paces seem to be just passing through your embark location. Every time I have remembered that happening then checked the world events after talking to a liaison, there had been, at about the right time, an army moving near may fort en route to another site which there was an event saying they attacked.

Every time I've checked the data structures for such invasions my script warned me about their destination being my location, so I think the hypothesis that they were en route to somewhere else is incorrect. In addition to their target being my site when they set out, their destination when leaving was their starting position, not another (potential actual target) location.

Also, for several ticks, I get the "siege" status, until they leave. Unless siege is a moveable feast, and surrounds these cowardly gobbos like a cloud of misery, there's something going on there.
