About crossbow ammo in new release
« on: April 13, 2021, 04:37:08 am »

Hi all, have been away for a while and have just noticed 47.05 release, so I have following (maybe stupid, don't hurt me too bad) question:
Is the old bug with training \ combat crossbow ammo switching fixed in this release? Or is it still frustrating to get your dwarfs to switch between wooden practice bolts and precious metal stuff?

P.s. Talking about this thing

That was fixed a couple of releases ago, yes.

Hm, forgive my ignorance, but I distinctly remember playing around December 2020 and I still had problems with dwarfs not changing to iron bolts when ordered to attack some goblins. Was kinda funny but frustrating to read how wooden bolts are deflected by goblins` leather armor.
I'm not  excluding the possibility that I have somehow messed up with the designation and general setup (most probably the cause), so if someone could share a link or something to good tutorial on the right way to setup training \ combat ammo, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Were they actually carrying iron bolts and not using them?

Has always worked for me. Wood for training, metal for combat. Crossbow squad pick up a bunch of both. Make sure there's enough bolts set for the squad (the number you set is for the whole squad, not per dwarf).

They were set to use iron bolts as combat ammo, but not picking them up while having plenty of them in the stockpile. While not at war I thought that it's a reasonable behavior to only carry training (wooden) bolts, but as soon as I ordered them to attack, they just went on with what they had on them, i.e. wooden bolts, some have actually ran out and went just bashing enemies with crossbows.

May I ask, what should the correct behavior regarding ammo be: Should they carry both types of ammo (training\combat) on them at all times or they should carry only one type at a time and switch when ordered to attack? I mean if both types of ammo are set up in the squad menus.

I guess I'll have to look into into it more next time I make a fort.

They're supposed to carry both. 25 training and 25 combat (with more than that possible if they grab a large stack last.)

All military dwarves have trouble getting their gear when activated and will often rush into battle lacking the proper equipment.  I haven't tested your situation out, I just let them use whatever, but I would guess that the dwarves rush into battle, fire off the practice rounds, run to the stockpile, and pick up the proper ammunition then.

Edit: I don't think they will run back for more ammo, however, if they are allowed to run into melee.  They will begin to strike the enemy with their crossbows.  If you keep them behind fortifications I think it should work.

Crossbow dorfs in a bunker will go back for more ammo.
Crossbow dorfs in the open, well, yeah, we all know how borked they are. Ha ha.

If they didn't pick up the bolts in the first place likely you were suffering either a stockpile links problem, a bin problem or didn't assign enough bolts for the squad.

I've had marksdwarves fetch used ammo off the ground in the middle of a fight with birds. As long as they can't melee the enemy, they'll reload.

i haven't noticed a particular problem, but maybe i just haven't noticed.  i usually assign each marksdwarf squad 1000 wood or bone bolts for training only, and 2000 metal bolts for combat only, and i have my manager orders set to make more if there's less than that many in stock.  i also keep my marksdwarfs behind fortifications and stick the metal ammo stockpile (no bins) right in the tower/etc with them, so they don't have far to go if they run out.  the wood/bone ammo stockpile is generally next to the archery range for the same reason

I'm pretty sure a squad can't hold more than 500 of each at once. Does that not result in a lot of ammo lying around that can't be hauled?
