I believe we're all starting as a common vertebrate that we branch off of, so our current posts probably are irrelevant? I think.

Since we’re playing as vertebrates now, can I change my species given the new info or am I locked?

You probably should rewrite. But I still haven't made the initial "round 0" post to write on the niches and available biomes. So wait a little.

There are three continents, and one microcontinent. The only (habitable) island currently in the map is the Isolated Serenity, which has a tropical forest biome.

That is the niche spectrum. It exists so someone won't jump from an apex predator to a large browser in one speciation. They can though, but they will get a whopping -18 penalty to their new species's E.S and most likely fail to speciate, or have a very weak panda analogue instead, if they are lucky.

Yes it is still open. It is always open as long as there is space.

You can start as anything, free from any penalty, just for this once as this is the initial radiation. But after this, penalties apply.
