Soldiering petitions rare in 47.05 ?
« on: April 01, 2021, 08:56:52 am »

Hi all,

Since the advent of Mercenary guilds, has anyone noticed a decline in petitions for soldiers to join your fort? I miss having this influx of of diverse military strength and am considering modding the mercenary guilds out of various entities in my next world as I suspect they may be hoovering up all of the wandering mercenaries looking for word (but I don't know if this is the case or if I am just unlucky). Interested to hear everyone's thoughts if they've noticed this or may have any idea why this may be happening.

Took a peek into the entity_default.txt file and I am not even sure we can mod out mercenary companies, I only see an entry for Merchant companies which I don't think are the same.

Merchant companies aren't the same as merc companies, as you suspected. You're also not the first to note the reduction in the number of mercs streaming to your fortress: it has been mentioned before on the forum (around Christmas?).

I had four in 10 years in my last fortress. Yes they're very rare.
In this thread someone mentioned the problem is with too many bandits in the world.

Possibly true, but there's a lot of mercenary companies in all the world I make too (fortress before that one, also 47.05 got none). So the balance is definitely not quite right at the moment.

Either way, some mercs are attracted by danger, so get your fortress to the point where migrants are avoiding you, and you may get a couple.

I definitely haven't had a soldier applicant in 47.05, although someone told me my fort has to be exciting for that to happen now, and I do go to a lot of trouble to make them pretty safe... I do still get the occasional entertainer (rare) and a LOT of monster hunters. Soldiers just don't turn up. I'm also wondering if travelling scholars are still a thing, all I'm getting is thieves in my library, but no scholars.

Had a ton of scholars in my last fortress. They're still roving about.
