How often does your game crash?
« on: March 23, 2021, 05:56:36 am »

So my last 12+ fortresses have ended because at some point, around some time, the game crashed and there was nothing I could do to prevent it. I've tried a lot of things and am pretty sure these crashes are unrelated to equipment  corruption bugs. I use Dfhack but these crashes occur in vanilla as well. Sometimes I get eight years other times I barely get two. This has actually gotten to be very depressing for me. A fortress starts to develop a unique story and then the window closes and its over. I now play with no expectation that I will get a good game out of a fortress but I still do play and cant help get sucked into it. I've tried getting into other games because of this but DF is really the only video game I want to play.

What are your experiences with crashes like this? These are fortress ending crashes. Am I unlucky?

Do you mean in 47.05?
So far never. Averaging about 7-10 years per fortress, only played a few since the release though. Also not using the manager material filter much (crashes in big worlds for whatever reason).

In previous versions though, sure, equipment corruption, breaking weapon traps, trees hit buildings, had all them.

Adventurer also has the strange patches of "crash" which exist here and there around the world.

I can't recall a crash without explanation in Fortress (somehow avoided "werebeast gives birth") in a long time. Had a few in Adventurer though.

Haven't played 0.47.05, but in previous versions I've played for decades, not without a crash, but with recovery from crashes by restarting from the latest yearly save (which I perform manually and backup, so I have one save per year). I've had a few cases of fatal save corruptions, though, as well as a lot of equipment corruption (remember, it wasn't not the latest version) that could only be recovered from by reverting to a previous save and cross your fingers (as no ways to repair the damage was known at that time).

I've given up on TwbT, as it seemed to be unstable not only on embark (which can be worked around by switching mode when embarking). Again, I gave it up a fair while ago, so it might have improved.

I'm not sure I've crashed throughout the 47.* run. Even when others have suffered, not sure if I've skipped bad versions or missed bad events by pure luck.

I tend to use the pure (non-LNP) download, no DFHack/TWBT. My only 3rd-party item being Therapist, if that 'helps'.

I have one XP machine that refuses to believe the 32-bit binaries are 32-bit (yet another XP machine proves otherwise, but it's a V.V.old laptop that would strain to run it anyway, so may lack some necessary OS tweak or just be giving up for other reasons but gives that generic excuse) and also under XP I ''ought'' to have problems with memory limitation, but somehow I never hit that before manually-abandoning a savegame due to it not going quite how I want it to, and reverting to an original worldgen copy for another go or starting entirely anew.

(Whoops, using Wikimarkup, unconsiously, while avoiding my current issues with forum-markup. ;)

Yes, in 47.05. I've posted many save files here of examples and have posted several bug reports.

Can people who use DFhack say if these type of crashes are more common? The crashes dont seem directly related to the entering of any dfhack command.

Which reports specifically? Besides Expel Dwarf crash (which thankfully hasn't occured yet, but I bet it's linked to the bug fix added for off-site children in 47.05), I can't see any new Fortress ones (bug tracker filter gets stuck quite often, so likely I'm missing a few). Unless you're using a Mac of course. There's a reason Steam won't have Mac support at first...

What tileset are you using? As was said earlier TWbT is notoriously crashy (don't even try to play Adventurer with it). LNP turns on a lot of crap by default without people realising sometimes.

I've never had a crash.  I don't use DFHack, though, and only use therapist passively.

It's been years since I've had a crash. Vanilla only, no tools, no DFHack.

My forts don't typically survive more than ~3 years, so that could be it :p Normally FPS death is much more of an issue for me.

Playing vanilla on a Mac, often for a few decades of gametime, sometimes less, sometimes more. I've had crashes in the past, but not for the last few years of real life years. My last game-ending crash would have been.... A long time ago, as I don't remember it.

I use kruggsmashs tileset. Can DFHack cause crashing like this?

With 47.05, I only get crashes when using TWBT.

With DFHack and a simple tileset it doesn't crash.

since updating to the latest LNP i've been getting more crashes than usual. i do have it set to seasonal autosaves, so i don't lose too much progress, but it's more frequent than i've noticed in the past.
LNP turns on a lot of crap by default without people realising sometimes.
hmm.

With 0.47.05? 100% of the time, on startup.

Definitely an issue with the SDL version, the Legacy version works.

It did work once or twice, but now it won't.

Your game isn't working at all. That's not the same as this discussion on stability and the disappointment of losing forts through crashes.

I also haven't had a single crash in version 47.05. My fort is 28 years old and I'm playing on linux with dfhack and dwarf therapist. Graphics are vanilla ascii - no TWBT or anything.
I can't comment on worldgen crashes, since this is the only world I've generated in this version.
