Strange Mood, But Won't Pick Up Bones
« on: March 13, 2021, 12:15:58 am »

Hello,
This is my first post to the forum so please treat me kindly.

I have a possessed expedition leader who has claimed the Clothier shop.

His clues are:
bones... yes
cloth... thread
These clues cycle with a frequency that leads me to believe that he only needs one of each.

He already has my only cave spider silk cloth, but he won't leave to go grab bones despite there being a good deal of bones in a stockpile fairly close to him.
My bones stockpile has:
gray langur bone [3]
gray langur bone [4]
stray mule bone [14]
stray mule bone [14]

Do you have any tips on how to save my MVD (most valuable dwarf), might this be a bug, or will I have to entomb him?
Thank you for your time.

Seeing as you have plenty of bones (in fact he agrees, he said "yes"!) you need more fabric. You have a clue though, as he already took silk cloth, he just needs one or two more pieces of silk cloth.

You might have some already in your hospital. Go to your hospital and close the hospital and remove the zone so that the fabric there is available to him. With any luck, he'll run up, take the cloth, and you can turn the hospital back on when he's done looting.

Also, you can build a loom, and set a weaver dwarf (not your possessed leader) to make all thread into fabric, if you have any silk threads.

If you have no threads, you could try digging to the caverns layer, and getting your weavers to collect the spider webs if there are any. Those can be spun into silk thread and made into silk cloth on the looms. One loom per weaver. It's simple to get more dwarves to take up weaving: {u} and then {z} to select your new weaver, then {p} and {l} to get to their labour tasks, then choose weaving and use {enter} to turn it on if it wasn't on already.

Finally, if all that fails, you can hope that he won't go beserk before the traders arrive. Make sure you have something to trade for cloth. Might want to lock the doors around his workzone until they arrive, in case he doesnt make it.

So he's not grabbing any bones because he needs the cloth first?

Yep. He might even have grabbed some bones already, and just not need any more (I think that's what the "yes" indicates EDIT: turns out they always say "yes" to bones, but still, there were plenty of bones, so it was still not a bone lack problem). You can check with {t} on the workbench he chose as to whether he has anything already in the workbench with him. It's irrelevant, though, as it's not bones he needs. Dorfs want a random 1, 2, or 3 pieces of whatever it is they decided they need. You evidently have a nice big bonepile, so it has to be the cloth. It could have been plant-cloth (hemp, cotton, pigtail, or whatever else cloth satisfies that) or animal-cloth (wool or whatever) but you said he took a piece of silk-cloth, so he's going to possibly need one or two more pieces of that.

Op said they didn't collect the bones, so I assumed they already checked. They always seem to say "bones....yes" whatever stage they're at.

you need a second piece of cloth occasionally. I know you said that the frequency leads you to believe you only need 1 of each but this seems like the most likely reason.

beyond that, check the usual: burrows, alerts, forbidden items, locked doors

Oh, right. I've not checked the word they say after the need all that often. But the point remains, they won't want the bones unless they can get the number of cloth pieces they need: If they already have one piece, then another one or two pieces are needed. Up to three pieces of any one item can be required.

He has exactly one cave spider silk. I'll attempt to rush to the caverns and get some silk. Thank you for your suggestions. I'll report back to let you know if this works.

Success! My expedition leader needed one more silk cloth!
After that, he rushed to my bone stock pile and got to work making his item.

Thanks to everyone who offered help!

These clues cycle with a frequency that leads me to believe that he only needs one of each.

The "item display cycle frequency" rule only worked 100% reliably back in version 0.28.181.40d (and earlier) - in 0.31 and later, the primary mood item will always display for only a single time slot regardless of whether the mood requires 1, 2, or even 3 of it. Additional mood components for Decorations still follow the rule correctly, though.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

If you have DFHack enabled, you can also use the "showmood" command to see exactly what the dwarf wants.
