Housing structures?
« on: November 29, 2007, 09:42:00 pm »

So, what's a good way to make Housing structures? I saw some neat things using stairwells and Diagonal movement, But I forgot to save it. So I've come to ask for plans on my giant, floating apartment complex.

yeah.. we really need some stickies or wiki entries.  I am still in the midst of creating some basic modular models in SketchUp to generate some starting plans so that we can start a "building plans repository" in the wiki eventually.  I don;t know how many good plans gets washed down the forum timeline unless somebody helpful with good memory repoints out again.  search function here is well... a little tedious.

I tend to have a section of map with 10 layers reserve for housing. A straight and continous stairways connects all 10 floors and is surrounded by 20 rooms on each floor. Depending on what I want to do, I can have workshops branch off the housing structures so workers are moderately close to their rooms.

I love the sketchup stuff that sphr has done. I was bored and wanted to learn how to use it so I modeled the Raynard Whirlpool design (just one block.)

That empty tile in the center is just BEGGING to be filled with water from above, with one floodgate for each room.

I use a simple design, with rows of 3x2 rooms sticking out from a long hallway, with a cabinet, bed, and coffer in each.

[Healthcare Update Thread] Personally, I can't wait for doctors to get possessed and start surgically attaching axes to champion soldier's arms.

It's not actually an empty space, it's a gap caused by having an eight way intersection of walls. See the original design pattern here:

That is very cool, looks like an actual town, at least as Dwarves go. The statues are a nice touch. I second the notion of having the flood-column in the middle; I contemplated something similar for my nobles, though it would come out of the ceiling.

Demonsthenes, I remember the post you're talking about, about verticle apartments with diaganol movement. I can't draw it for you, but the gist of it works in that you have the central staircase, with a room on each corner.

Hi hi.  :) With the advent of diagonal movement, my love of the T-shaped four tile room has waned. I originally favored it because it allowed a dwarf to access all three common pieces of furniture and a space to stand without climbing over anything, but now a 2x2 square works just as well. Right now I'm using the following design. I'm still not sure how I feel about the shared door, but it's definitely a good way to use diagonals. As always, I've tried to include a repeated plaza structure, this time surrounding the central stairwell, where you can slap statues or waterfalls or what-have-you.

I think I'm going to try and combine the two methods. I find the original much more stylish (and I feel bad about making my drunken, probably overweight Dwarves squeeze around corners all the time). And stuffing plazas to the ceiling with statues sounds like just the way to get rid of all my stone.

My favorite room design is still the one I used here:

Orbinches

which houses 200 and fits on a single floor. The design is really easy to scale up and down, so I'm trying a scaled-down version of it in my newest fort. This design will cover 4 floors, 2 of 'regular' housing and 2 of larger noble housing fitted into the same area.
