L, Mira, Ehto

Her own ears perked up at the sound of the distant voice, and after running a hand through her hair she briefly panicked as she realized her hood had fallen. The moment she saw the respondent however, those fears vanished as the muffled swish of tail wagging began to emanate from her cloak. With what could only be described as excited and reckless abandon, she leapt out from the door way to fully reveal herself.
One of us? This is the first time since I left home... "Oh, hi there! My name is Ehto!" she called back, waving her arm just as eagerly as her tail. "I'm a sorceress. Uh... what is this place exactly? I think my last spell might have misfired somehow..."

"Call me L." She wasn't as suspicious of this girl as compared to when she arrived, but she was still guarded. Looking innocuous was an unreliable way to tell whether someone was dangerous; she would know. I'll find you, someday. Somehow. "This is a castle between worlds. At least, that's what I've been told. Do you know what the Trespassers are?"

As soon as the sound of a crash reached her ears, Mira's hand instantly flicked to her sword's hilt, halting her march as she turned to the direction of the noise. Before she could start advancing in that direction, the source of the noise poked their head out of one of the rooms, revealing a small, black haired girl who, like her current companion, bore two dog ears. Upon seeing that the intruder was yet another unfamiliar face who seemed confused about their location, Mira's hand left her sword, the black armored knight simply narrowing the red orbs underneath her helmet as L began to converse with 'Ehto'.

In spite of all her attempts, it was starting to seem like she was part of the welcoming committee.

Between worlds? But... if that's true, then that means... were the Pluralists actually right all along?
"Nope, never heard of em," the sorceress answered, "Heard plenty about the Astral Horrors, but Trespassers are a new one. Are they spooky existential monsters trying to feast on everything too? And if we're apparently in a castle between worlds... I'm guessing they also threaten multiple planes of reality, right?"

A pang of hunger tempted her even as she mentioned the prospect of a feast, but she gave no outward sign of it as she pushed the urge away. Finding something to devour could wait until she had a better idea of what was going on.

"Sounds like they're the same thing. Or, close enough that we don't need to worry about it, anyway. Apparently almost everyone here was just sorta pulled by some mysterious force to go around fighting them off." L shrugged. "It's on my way to my actual goal, and I'd feel bad if I didn't help with a problem as huge as this, so unless it turns out there are a lot more liars on this thing than I think there are, I'm going to stay and fight."

She paused for a moment before remembering her companion. The woman didn't seem especially keen on speaking at the best of times. Electing to spare her the necessity of speech, L nodded toward the other swordswoman. "This is Mira. I just got here, she's been here a lot longer than me."

Interesting... so at least she wasn't the first one to randomly find herself lost and confused. There was some small comfort in that, here. It raised the question of just what force could possibly have great enough existential authority to forcibly pull her and others out of their home realities, but she had the feeling getting that answer wouldn't be as easy as just asking these two.

"Hi there!" the hund again waved, "I take it you're the strong-silent type, then. Say, how many other people are here at this point? I'm gonna take a wild guess and say neither of you planted to this garden I landed in, and whoever did had to have tended it somewhat recently."

Flicking her eyes towards Ehto, Mira didn't verbally respond, only raising her hand ever so slightly as a form of wave, before folding her arms back together. At the very least, they didn't have to explain too much this time.

"Don't know." She paused to think. "You're the sixth person I've talked to here, and I've seen more running around, but I don't think this whole thing is very big." Six new people? Apparently I'm not shy any more. That or I'm too nervous about this entire thing to notice. "None of them looked like gardeners to me, but I wouldn't know." She shrugged. Her eyes drifted back to the other girl's ears and tail. She had to wonder if there were any similarities between them; it was likely that such things were more normal where Ehto was from, but L was used to being the literal only person in the world with them.

"Huh, only six so far? I'd expect a better turnout for a threat like this..." the sorceress began to idly scratch at the back of her neck, already feeling the sensation beginning to spread to her face. There was only one reason for it to be acting up here, and as she turned around to look at the gardening room, she instantly knew she was right. Those crystals scattered about the place must've been producing artificial sunlight. Made sense. She'd simply been so caught up with everything that she hadn't even noticed it till the rash started.
Note to self: keep the hood up while in the garden from now on...
As she pulled her hands away from the area, a series of circular glyphs manifested in the air just centimeters from her finger tips. A small shadowy mist emanated from the sigil, so dark it could rival a cloud of vantablack ink. It vanished no sooner than it touched Ehto's skin, and the rash that was starting there was gone along with it. It was only then she noticed L's eyes lingering on her... more beastly bits.
"You know, yours are really pretty," she mused "I haven't seen such a shiny coat before. The way it catches the light almost makes me jealous~"

"There's far more than six already working against the Trespassers, I would say around 20 in this group alone. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them took up gardening as a hobby" Mira abruptly stated, her unfiltered and flat voice coming out of her shadowed armor. Other than that, she didn't move an inch, keeping her arms folded and red eyes focused on Ehto.

L froze, almost as if time itself had stopped for her, as she attempted to piece together how to respond to Ehto's comment. The first sign of her unthawing was an incongruous blush spreading across her cheeks, only highlighted by the contrast between it and the silvery locks framing it. "Uhh. . ." she began eloquently. Nobody ever comments on those other than Lilith. And Lilith. . . That thought only made her embarrassment deepen. The entire situation was utterly bizarre for her; even the way it bothered her was different from what she was used to. "Ahem. Uh, thank you, I take care of myself for my Queen."

"Twenty, eh?" she pursed her lips slightly. Twenty was significantly better news, but far from comforting. If Trespassers truly were anything like the Horrors, twenty people may not be enough, unless they're all the finest heroes from their respective worlds. Not even the great Shrolynder, for all his power as High Sorcerer, had been able to stop them without sacrificing his life to do so. And even then, the spell he fueled only managed to drive them back, farther into the astral plane than most scholars of the time had been aware it even extended.  It did nothing to actually slay the fiends. Or at least, that was what Father had always said...and a few others. The others always had very... interesting allegations to add to it though.
I know I'll find him and get the answers someday. They're all wrong, there has to be more to the story. I know him, I know he would never have...

"Oh, you're welcome." Ehto answered, pushing those rather distressing thoughts away for now. "Besides my siblings, I've never met someone else who shares my traits before. It's nice to not have to worry about keeping them hidden or risk people panicking... or calling you an abomination and a crime against nature... or kicking you out after you saved them from a dragon and got a little drunk at the celebra- oh whoops, I'm letting the bitterness get to me again... anywaaaays, I'm sure your Queen appreciates all the effort you put into taking care of it. What's she like?"

"I've never met someone else with those traits ever. As far as I know, only one Vi-Ra-Nor can exist at once." She froze for a brief moment, a different and much more fearful sort of pause than her previous confusion. It lasted only an instant; anyone who cared about who Vi-Ra-Nor was would have known about Lilith and Kallisto. It's not like they can track down your family from here, or something. Stop being paranoid. "As far as your question. . ." She looked up, gazing off into nothing for a moment. And then immediately looked down, her blush receiving a small transfusion. No, I am absolutely not talking about that. Why'd she have to bring up my ears. . .? The embarrassment faded quickly, however, as she thought.

"The Queen of Shadows is. . . misunderstood. Everyone is either terrified of her or wants to use her for their own sick purposes. And she can be scary -" one of the largest understatements of her short life "- but mostly she was just scared herself. Scared of others, scared of them hurting her again, but mostly scared of hurting people." Her hand drifted up toward her neck of its own accord. "She's quiet, but so much kinder than anyone knows. So much warmer." L found herself blinking more than usual. "She didn't smile often, but I got to see it when she did. When she's get carried away on something that caught her interest, and forgot about everything. . ." Her vision blurred.

"Sorry." She wiped at her face with a well-worn sleeve. "I, um. I'm the Knight of Power, she's very important to me. And in general." She glanced off to the side, awkwardly evading further eye contact. "I gave everything up for her, even my heartbeat, and I'd do it again if I had the chance." Her demeanor recovered a bit as she made this proclaimation, posture strengthening and voice becoming more resolute. "That's why I'm here, after all."

"There's nothing to be sorry for," Ehto shook her head, smiling wistfully as she herself looked at the stones. Her hands gripped her cloak tighter around her body. "I think I know... exactly what you mean. Having someone who means the world to you. Someone you know better than anyone, maybe even themselves sometimes. Someone who you'll never give up on. Someone you know won't let you down. That special person who the mere thought of is enough to make you stand back up and keep going even when you think you can't. I had someone like that. I don't know where he's gone, or why he left. Didn't even say a proper goodbye, just took off one day without telling anyone."
Despite the somber mood emanating from the sorceress, her eyes quite literally lit up as she continued. The light they gave carried an unnatural air that seemed to itself carry nothing but ill omens wherever it's gentle radiance fell. The nails on her visible hand had grown considerably longer, more akin to claws by now. This change however, the hund saw, and no sooner did her nails recede to normal length once she did.
"I don't even know how long I've been searching for him anymore. All I know is that I want to find him. And I want to help him, no matter what it is, even if what everyone says about him is true. I felt something wasn't right the moment I read the note he left. He's going to do something... dangerous...and stupid... and rash... but also something that he thinks has to be done, and that he's the only one who can do it. I want to know why he keeps forgetting that he isn't alone anymore... why he keeps trying to fix everything by himself..."

Returning to her standard silence, Mira couldn't help but return her gaze to L as she recounted the 'Queen of Shadows', and to Ehto again when they began to share their story as well, barely taking in the physical changes of the sorceress. Truthfully, Mira had brushed off L's comment about being 'similar', but perhaps there was a similarity, in a way. They both existed to serve another, but where L served out of devotion and love, Mira simply served out of purpose. L might've been meant to carry her role, but she grew into it, not born into it.

Ultimately, she would never understand how people formed attachments to others. But she supposed it was just a trait people had.
